Cricket 1908
44 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. M arch 26, 1908, at the Oval by an innings and 83 runs, he took five wickets for 34 runs but failed to contribute to his side’s total of 234. The two sides did not meet again until 1860, by which time Mr, Rutter had left Rugby. He was a fast left-handed bowler, but batted right-hand. In his last year at Rugby he lost his bowling and took to wicket-keeping. He also made a great advance as a batsman and in the match with the M.C.C. at Lord’s scored 16 and 127 against the bowling of Dean and Royston. (Mr. Arthur Haygarth, in Scores and Biographies (xiv.-1106) wrongly attributes this feat to the late Mr. Arthur Robert Rutter, who died in 1882.) At Rugby earlier in the season he had made 44 and 16 not out for The Eleven v. Next Eleven (with Martingell and Diver) and 86 for Present v. Past. He afterwards played for the Will-o’ - the-Wisps, of which he was an original member, the Perambulators, and Anomalies, and for four years served on the Committee of the M.C.C. He was a good Rugby foot ball player and was President (1871-73) of the Rugby Football Union during the first three years of its existence. He was also the first President of the Old Rugbeian Society, which was foundedSin 1889. T h e R ev . R . M. S ton eh ill . The Rev. William M. Stonehill, who 3 e death occurred on February 5th at New York from typhoid fever, was born at Oxford in 1855. On going to the United States in 1889 he identified himself with the Brooklyn C.C., for which he did good service, and in recent years umpired in all the principal matches of the Metropolitan District Cricket League Championship and in inter-City and International contests. He was a very earnest worker amongst the poorer class, and was widely known as the “ Bishop of the Bowery.” F. F. K. M rs . E lizabeth W il ls , mother of the late M r. T. W . Wills, who played for Rugby, Cambridge University, Kent, and Victoria, and who was the first man to teach the aborigines cricket, died at Geelong on January 11th in her ninety-second year. Her husband and two of her sons were murdered many years ago by natives whilst exploring in Australia. C R IC K E T IN N E W Z E A L A N D . During the season of 1906-7 Canterbury and Auckland were recognised as the two strongest teams in New Zealand, and to the lot of the former fell the honour of obtaining the Plunket Shield, presented by H.E. the Governor to the New Zealand Cricket Council for competition among their affiliated Associations. The trophy was to be awarded at the end of the 1906-7 season to the Association which was considered by the Council to hold the best record of the year. Thereafter the Shield could only be wrested from the holders by another Association challenging and defeating them on their own ground. A vote of the Council awarded the Shield to Canterbury, and in December last Auckland, assisted by Relf, who was playing his first inter-Provincial match, went to Christchurch in an endeavour to wrest the honour from them. CANTERBURY v. AUCKLAND. Played at Christchurch on December 14, 16 and 17. Auckland won by an innings and 135 runs. Lusk and Patrick gave Canterbury a fine start by making 93 for the first wicket, but the rest could do little with Relf’s bowling and the total reached only 190. Auckland responded with 539, Hemus and Relf both exceeding the hundred. Hemus made 100 for the first wicket with Brook-Smith and added 177 for the fourth with Relf. He gave three chances—at 89, 126, and 137—in scoring 148 out of 347 in two hundred and fifty-eight minutes, and hit a dozen 4’s, the majority of them capital late cuts. Relf hit twenty-one 4’s in his large innings, made strokes all round the wicket, and scored his 157 out of 301 obtained yrhilst in. Canterbury, upon going in the second time, showed slight improvement upon their former display, and were severely beaten. Score and analysis C anterbury . First innings. H. B. CANTERBURY v. OTAGO. Played at Christchurch on December 24, 25, and 26. Canterbury won by 104 runs. Canterbury showed to more advantage in this match than when they met Auckland, and ex perienced little difficulty in winning by 104 runs. It was thought that Otago found the pace of the pitch too great, for in Dunedin the wickets are generally slow. Reese mgde a valuable 49 for Canterbury, going in when three wickets had fallen for 36, and putting on 68 in partnership with Moorhouse, a left-hander; he was caught off a beautiful drive which cannoned off the bowler’s head to mid-off. Bennett and Reese afterwards bowled with such effect that Otago were dismissed for 92. Moorhouse, in Canterbury’s second innings, again played well, and hit a 6 and eleven 4’s in making 86 out of 171 scored whilst in ; he was, however, missed when 68. With Reese he added 44 for the fourth wicket, and with Orchard 75 for the fifth. Otago, set 359 to win, lost' six wickets for 110. Both Austin and Eckhold showed strong defence, and the latter and Watson put on 75 for the eighth wicket in eighty minutes. But Canterbury won comfortably. Score and a C anterbury . First innings. H.
