Cricket 1908
S e p t . 17, 1908. CR ICKET A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 423 DERBYSHIRE. Derbyshire, though doing better than in the previous year, experienced a poor season. The batting was unreliable, the inability of L. G. Wright to regain his old form being severely felt. The best batting of the side was shown by Needham, the left-hander, who had the satisfaction of making two separate hundreds in the match with Essex at Leyton, when, dfspite his success, he was on the losing side. Cadman, second in the aver ages, was most useful as an all-round player but was not always available, whilst Lawton, though making no large scores, was very consistent. The bowling was often very good indeed, and although only Cadman’s wickets cost less than twenty runs each, both Warren and Bestwick claimed over a hundred victims for less than twenty-two runs a-piece. Derbyshire had the great satisfaction of beating Notts at Chesterfield, and they also defeated Hampshire botii at home and away. BATTING AVKBAGES. Times Most notr in an Total Inns. out. inns. runs. Northamptonshire experienced a very poor season, winning only three and losing four teen of the tweuty-two matches commenced. Their batting was very weak indeed, and the side was not an attractive one. Kingston, who headed the averages, was reliable, but Pool, although he was responsible for the only century credited to the-side, was not at his best. Thompson, whilst rendering good service, was at times unnecessarily slow. The side experienced a humiliation and a triumph on their own ground, being put out for totals of 27 and 15 by Yorkshire but beating Lancashire, after a very exciting finish, by a single wicket. The bowling of the side was at times of a very fa’i*standard, though Thompson and Driffield were ex pensive. East and Wells, who met with the most success in this department of the game, were, with Thompson, essentially the all round men of the side. W. H. Kingston Thompson (G. J.) C. J. T. Pool ... P. A. Thorpe (3*1-1-16-0). SOMERSET. Somerset, unable to rely upon a regular side, had a very poor season, only two of the twenty matches commenced being won and as many as thirteen lost. The match with Surrey was, after an interval of a few years, renewed, much to the satisfaction of fol'owers of the game in both counties. The side gained a wonderful success over Hamp shire at Southampton, Woods and Braund each making over a hundred not out and pulling off the game after the outlook had appeared hopeless. That and their win over Warwickshire in May were their only two victories, whilst as many as eight of the thirteen reverses they sustained were by an innings. Johnson made a dramatic re appearance for the side in August, scoring two separate hundreds in the match with Middlesex at Taunton and following them with another, against Hampshire at South ampton, the next time he went in. Later in the same month he made 126 against Kent at Tauntou and, altogether, scored 603 runs in eight innings with an average of 75 37. The next highest average on the side was the 25*56 of Braund, who always worked hard but seldom received much support. The bowling was of only moderate strength and only one player averaged under 27 runs per wicket. W. T. Gresswell, a young Repton- ian, bowled very well at times and may develop into a very good player. His career as a county cricketer, however, is likely to be short as it is understood that he settles in Ceylon at the end of next season. BATTING AVERAGES.
