Of the twenty-two matches plaved, seven were won and nine lost. The form of the side was very uncertain as is shown by the fact that, although they twice went down before Derby shire, they managed to beat Kent at Canterbury in sensational style by one wicket a few minutes before time. In their match with Northamptonshire at South hampton they declared their first innings closed whilst still behind and won by nine wickets—a performance unparalleled in the annals of first-class cricket. Sprot proved an admirable captain and a very reliable run-getter, several of his best innings being played at a critical time. The averages were headed by Hill, who was, however, able to appear only occasionally, and the honours of the season were shared with Sprot by Mead and Bowell, the only members of the side to make over a thousand runs. Llewellyn was in very good all-round form and Capt. White played several useful innings. The bowling needed strengthening, but the desired improvement may be effected next year if McDonell is alile to play regularly. The bulk of the bowling fell to Badcock, Newman, and Llewellyn, Persse, who did well in 1907, proving most expensive. The fielding of the side was always of a high standard and their cricket attractive. BATTING AVERAGES. Times Most not in an Inns. out. inns. Considering that Gloucestershire did not win a match until the last week of Juue, the side may be said to have had a fairly good season seeing that their full record shows eight games won, eleven lost, and five drawn. They were twice beaten by Kent, Middlesex, Worcestershire and Yorkshire, whereas their only double success was against Warwick shire. Their meetings with Middlesex pro duced two very well-contested games, the Metropolitans winning on each occasion—at Lord’s by three wickets and at Bristol by two runs. Their best performance was when they beat Surrey by ten wickets in the return match, a result due largely to the very suc cessful bowling of Jessop. . Neither C. O. H. Sewell nor C. L. Townsend played for the County, and Champain appearel only four times. Jessop enjoyed a very successful season and deservedly headed the averages with over 42 runs an innings. In the match with Somerset at Bath he made two separate hundreds, and on two other occasions— against Notts and Sussex—played a three- figure innings. Lang.lon an I Board were his chief supporters and the brothers Roberts al.«o proved very useful. Dennett, without doing so well as in 1907, had another good season, his 149 wickets being taken at a cost of ‘20 40 runs each. Parker, Huggins, Ford and Mills gave him useful assistance at times, but it was to his lot that the greater share of the bowling fell. The side generally fielded very well, the captain setting them a splendid example. BATTING AVERAGES. Times Most not in an Total Inns. out. inns. runs. Aver. G. L.
