Cricket 1908
S e p t . 3, 1908. CRICKET A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 395 SU R R E Y v. L E IC E ST E R SH IR E . Played at the Oval on August 3 1 and September 1 and 2 . Drawn. The weather on Monday was depressing all day, and, showers being frequent, it was not surprising to find few spectators present. Surrey, going in first, made a good start on the slow wicket, Hayward and Hobbs scoring 47 for the first wicket in forty minutes before the latter was out to a finely-judged catch in the long-field. Hayward, batting rather more freely than usual, made his 38 in fifty minutes: he hit three successive 4’s off Astill, but was caught at slip in the same over. Marshal made a useful contribution, but the feature of the rest of the innings was the batting of Altham, the young Reptonian, who was making his first appearance for Surrey. He played stylish cricket for an hour and a-quarter without making a mistake, and was ninth out at 107, caught at cover-point: his batting, which is very forward in style, made a most favour able impression. Smith and Strudwick'put on 17 for the last wicket, and the innings after lasting one hundred and seventy-five minutes, closed for 184. Leicestershire replied with 29 without loss in twenty-five minutes, Knight making 21 of the number; and then, at half-past five, bad light and showers caused stumps to be drawn for the day. On Tuesday play was impossible owing to the saturated condition of the ground after heavy rain. On Wednesday Knight was bowled at 42, and six later Whitehead met a similar fate. King forced the game, and with Wood took the score to 106 ere being finely caught at point by M arshal; he made his 41 out of 58 in forty minutes. Coe made 17 by bright cricket, but shortly afterwards rain came down and caused stumps to be drawn. Wood batted one hundred and forty-five minutes for his 44 not out, showing great patience.
