Cricket 1908

382 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. A ugust 27 1908 AN ENGLAND ELEVEN. Some of the correspondents who have in the columns of the Spo tsman been airing their views on the constitution of the ideal Englan I eleven on this season’s form have made weird sel°ctions, but the final choice as determined by the majority of votes does not, except in one particular, leave much room for adverse criticism. The side—giving the names in the order of the votes they received—consists of Hirst, G. L . Jessop, Lilley, P. F. Warner, Blythe, Hayward, J . N. Crawford, C. B. Fry, Tyldesley, W. Brearley, an 1 Rhodes, It is a curious fact that in this eleven, strong as it is in every other respect, there is not one man— except Rhodes—who ha§ any special capacity as a slip fieldsman, though, as an enthusiastic friend of mine is never tired of insisting, most modern matches are won in the slips. Crawford often fields in the slips for Surrey, but I do not think his position is a par ticularly happy one for a man who has to play in glasses. The fact of the team being purely English ruled out Tarrant and Marshal, and for the same reason very few votes were given to Ranjitsinhji. Except as regards this question of slip-fielding I am not sure that on the general form shown this year the side could be materially strengthened, though I doubt the wisdom of playing both Rhodes and Blythe. Taking recent play as a guide, I should leave out Crawford, as I think he has had too much cricket and is for the moment quite off his game as a batsman and a good deal below his best as a bowler. Despite his fine work in Australia in the winter and his consistent success this summer for Staffordshire, Barnes only received one vote. Apparently the doings of the second- class counties do not attract much attention. Having a great respect for the opinions of A. O. Jones and Noble, and knowing also what MacLaren thinks of him, I cannot doubt that Barnes U an England bowler. He has only played once for England in a Test match in this country, appearing at Sheffield in 1902, when he did great things in the first innings. It is surprising that all the letter-writers in the Sportsm'in but one should have ignored him. Though the general result comes out all right, the details of the voting were rather curious. George Hirst deservedly heads the poll with 40 votes, but it is strange indeed that Crawford should have received one more vote than Fry and only one less than Hayward. Stranger still, Tyldesley—a bulwark in Test matches—only got 2 1 votes. To while away an idle half hour I j otted down another eleven — leaving out Ranjitsinhji, Tarrdut, and Marshal—and the combination does not seem to me so very far below the Sport*man's selection : J . R. Mason (captain), R. H . Spooner, B . J . T. Bosanquet, Hobbs, George Gunn, Barnes, Newstead, Denton, Fielder, Strudwick, and G. N. Foster. The weak point of this team is the absence of a left-handed bowler. Blythe and Rhodes are appropriated, and I don’t think Dennett or Dean is quite good enough for a place. The fieldi- g, with Foster, Mason, and George Gunn in the slips, Spooner at cover-point, Denton and Hobbs in the country, and btrud- wick at the wicket is very good indeed. One could not with fairness pick either F . S. Jackson or R. E . Foster. These two great cricketers have not entirely deserted the field this summer, but nothing has been seen of them in first-class matches. No apology is needed for picking G. N. Foster, his form since the University match having been splendid. If another bowler were thought desirable one of the batsmen might give way to Albert R e lf; but he would hardly be wanted on the same side with Barnes aud Newstead, all three being right-handed and of medium p ace—“ Balm ” in the Referee.
