374 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. A ugust 27, 1908. LANCA SH IR E v. W O R C ESTER SH IRE. Played at Manchester on August 20, 21, and 22 . Drawn. In the absence of Hornby, who was resting, Brearley captained the home side. Everything in the Lancashire innings was dwarfed by the batting of Tyldesley, who followed his fine effort against Leicestershire with a sound innings of 132. With Hartley he added 43 for the second wicket, and with Heap 123 for the fifth in eighty minutes. He played a very confident game, reaching 50 in fifty-five minutes, and completing 100 out of 107 in one hundred and twenty-five ; in all, he made 132 out of 213 in two hours and three-quarters, giving no real chance, and making some excellent cuts. When play had lasted three hours and a-half, and six wickets had fallen for 270, stumps were drawn (at 4.15) owing to rain and poor light. There was very heavy rain during the night and play could not be resumed the following day until half-an-hour before lunch. Then, with nine wickets down for 287, the innings was declared closed during the interval. The wicket favoured the attack to no small extent, and it was considered unlikely that Worcetershlre would save the follow-on. With only 18 scored Pearson, Bowley and Cuffe had all been sent back and, although Burns and G. N. Foster put on 31 and the latter and Arnold 25, half the side were out for 74, -and the total was only 91 when the seventh wicket fell. In the absence of sun the wicket had been slowly improving, though it still favoured the bowlers. Burrows and Bache, by a very valuable partnership, added 50 without further loss, saving the follow-on and quite pulling the game round. On the third morning Burrows was bowled with only a single added, and at 147 Bache was caught. The visitors’ innings closed for 161, leaving Lancashire with a lead of 126. The home side lost Macleod at 18, but Whitehead and Tyldesley forced the game well, adding 83 in forty-five minutes. At 138 for two wickets the innings was declared closed, leaving Whitehead to carry out his bat for 76, in which were eight 4’s. Worcestershire, set 264 to win. lost Bowley, who had been bowled by a no-ball without a run, at 19. Brcarley and Dean bowled so well chat it appeared more than likely that Lancashire would pull off the match. Arnold, however, played a stubborn game, batting one hundred and ten minutes 18 not out and Bache, although making only 5, seconded him well. It will be noticed that Lancashire declared both their innings closed. Score and analysis:— L an cash ire . A. On Sunday, June 28th, an instance occurred at Cardwell, North Queensland, of an eleven being disposed of without a run. The visit of the Tully River players to Cardwell was described as follows in tho supplement to the Herbert River Express of June 29th :—“ A complimentary social to the visit ing Tully River cricketers took place in the local Shire Hall on Saturday night last when a very enjoyable time was spent. Thirty couples indulged in the art of Terpsichore until 10.30 p.m., when refreshments were handed round. The singing of Auld Lang Syne by the assembled gathering brought to a close what is regarded as a pronounced succcss. On the following day (Sunday) a move was made to the cricket pitch. The Tully skipper (Mr. C. Walsh) winning the toss from Mr. R. C. Scully sent his opponents in to bat. The Cardwell lads made a good stand and were not dismissed until the century appeared on the board. The Tully Riverites then went to the wickets but were dismissed for the small total of 0 ; good old “ sundries ” even failing to score. Following on, they made 23, thus leaving the home team victors by an innings and 77 runs.” Following are the scores :— C a r d w e ll .
