Cricket 1908
370 CRICKET A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. A ugust 27, 1908. 87, had made 325. The outlook for Somerset appeared hopeless, but Braund (107) and Palairet (173) made 222 for the first wicket. F. A. Phillips scored 122 and two other players made over 50. Somerset, in short, scored 630 and Yorkshire, were dismissed for 1 1 3 and beaten by 279, Braund following up his fine innings by taking four wickets for 41. The play created quite a sensation, for Yorkshire were at their strongest just about that period aud, in fact, were not again beaten in a County Championship match during the year. It occasioned not the least surprise when, at the end of the season, Braund was chosen to visit Australia as a member of A. C. MacLaren’steam, for it was an honour he fully deserved. He thoroughly justified his inclusion, for in the five Test matches he took twenty-one wickets and scored 256 runs in seven completed innings, being second in the averages to MacLaren and beating both Hayward and Tyliesley. Since 1901 he has deservedly ranked as one of the foremost players of the day. In 1902 he made 1,432 runs and took 172 wickets, whilst in the following year his figures were respectively 1,425 and 134. Braund has been chosen repeatedly for the Players and for the Test matches with both Australia and South Africa, and has succeeded in p’aying at least one three- figure innings in each of these important fixtures. He has, moreover, been for some years one of the first players thought of when a team has been chosen to visit Australia, and each of the last three sides sent out has included him as a member. Had he been identified with a stronger county than Somerset he would in all probability have made an even greater name for himself, for it must at times have been depressing, not to say disheartening, to be so frequently on the losing side after doing the lion’s share of the batting and bowling. Braund, however, can always be relied upon to exert himself to the utmost for the sake of his side no matter what the state of the game may be. He is a sound and fine bat on all kinds of wickets, one of the most brilliant slip3 in the world, and a most accurate bowler of leg-breaks, which come much quicker off the pitch than the generality of such deliveries. May his benefit be the success it deserves! OBITUAEY. M r . M. J . D o d w o rth . Mr. Maurice J. Dodworth, of Bamford, Derbyshire, died on the 20th inst., after a long illness, in his sixty-first year. He had been connected with the Yorkshire County C.C. for thirty-two years, and at the time of his decease was its senior vice-President. He was also much interested in golf, bowls, and Association football. M r. J . C. L an e . Mr. John Charles Lane, for many years a member of the Committee of the Warwick shire County C.C. and its Treasurer since 1901, died suddenly on Saturday evening last. He had returned from a cricket match on the Edgbaston ground and was walking round his garden when he suddenly fell down and expired. He was a very useful player in his younger days, and was in his sixty- eighth year at the time of his death. R ICHARD DAFT’S “ Nottinghamshire Marl.”— Particulars apply, Radcliffe on-Trent, Notts.
