A ugust 20, 190S. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THK GAME. 365 minutes. Buckenham did little, but Benham kept McGahey company whilst 43 were added, the latter, who had made some very fine on-drivcs, then being bowled for 230 made out of 421 in six hours ; he hit twenty-five 4’s, and the only chance he offered Mas when 203, when he was missed at slip. The rest of ihe Essex innings was marked by some good batting by Benham, who put 011 32 in a quarter of an hour with Bead and 75 without a separation being effected with Russell in fifty minutes for the last w icket: he hit six 4’s in scoring 65 out of 132 in ninety-five minutes. The long innings, declared closed with nine wickets down for 573, lasted seven hours and three-quarters. Northants lost Kingston and Knight for 13, and, considering the excellence of the wicket, did very badly in losing their eighth wicket for 132. Then, however, Driffield and llawtin improved matters by adding 55, but by the end of the day nine wickets were down for 212. Yesterday the home side’s first innings quickly closed for 225 and they were called upon to follow on 348 behind. Kingston and Pool then made a fine resistance, the latter hitting brilliantly. They made 100 in seventy- five minutes and took the total to 125 before Kingston was bowled. At lunch two wickets were down for 1% , but 4 later Thompson left. At 157 Pool was caught at the wicket for a fine innings of 111 made in one hundred and thirty m inutes: he hit sixteen 4’s and did not offer a chance until 101. Vials, Wells, and Hawtin made useful scores but Essex won by an innings and 70 runs. Score and analysis:— E ssex . 8 6 J. W. H. T. Douglas, c Vials, b Driffield ... Played at Leicester on August 17, 18, an I 19. Lancashire won by ten wickets. Lancashire remained in the whole of the first day, scoring 461 for the loss of half their wickets. After Heap had been caught at the wieket at 2, Tyldesley played a fine game and, without giving a chance, made the highest score of the sea on With Hart ley, who was missed when 15, he added 225 for the second wicket in two hours and three-quarters, and with Sharp, who hit a 5 and eleven 4’s in his fault less 81, 147 for the third in one hundred minutes Tyldesley, fifth out at 454, made his 243out of 452 in three hundred and ten minutes, making some excellent late cuts and drives and hitting a 5 and twenty-seven 4’s. On the following morning the last five wickets fell for 45 in fifty-five minutes, Astill, who went on at 486, taking four of them for 1) runs. In this way the innings, after lasting six hours and a quarter, closed for 506. Leicestershire, in eighty minutes before lunch, lost six wickets for 71, though eventually the total was taken to 159. Wood hit five 4's in his faultless innings, and carried his bat through for 84, he being the only player to face Dean with any confidence. Following-on, 347 behind, the home side, Knight and Wood in, made 61 for the first wicket, after the fall of which the latter and Whitehead put on 49 without further loss. Wood reached 50 in fifty-five minutes, and was not out 66 when play ceased. On the third day the home side continued their uphill task, and only 15 were added before Whitehead was caught. King was bowled for a single figure, and at 109 Wood, who batted 160 minutes for 83 and hit nine 4’s, was caught at slip. Coe played a great game and fouud a very useful partner in Crawford, who helped to add 105 for the sixth wicket ; the latter hit a 6 and ten 4’s. Odell also rendered great aid by staying whilst 91 were put on in an hour, and when the innings closed Coe carried out his Vat for a faultless 145. Lancashire made light of their task and won by ten wickets. Score and analysis :— L an cash ire . A.
