Cricket 1908

3°6 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J u l y 30 , 1908 . eleven w ickets. Llew ellyn made his 153 out o f 221 in 100 m inutes and also took ten w ickets for less than 19 runs each. A fter the conclusion o f the season of 1902, during which he took as m any as 170 w ickets, Llew ellyn returned to South A frica and played very successfully against the Australian team w hich was visiting that country on its w ay hom e. H e played in all the three Test m atches, and in the first w as responsible for a delighfful inn ings o f 90. H e w as in E ngland again by the comm encem ent o f 1903, and, although he again did very w ell, it soon becam e evident that he w as not quite so go od a bow ler as form erly. Perhaps the strair o f three successive seasons without a break told upon him . H e certainly took 75 w ickets durin g the season, but at a cos o f slightly over tw enty-nine and a-half runs each. A lthou gh his b ow lin g show ec a talling-off, his batting w as as reliable a before and tw ice durin g the season he reached three-tigures. In 1905, when he scored 1,280 runs and averaged 35-55, h m ade tw o separate hundreds against D erbyshire on the D erby ground and near the end ot the season played a great inn ings of 186 for Players of the South against Gentlem en o f the South at B ourne m outh. Last year, o w in g to an accident, he w as kept out o f the field for som e w eeks, but this year he has played regu larly and generally w ith great advantage to his side. In tw o m atches at L o rd ’s early in the season he scored 299 runs ir four innings, and a little later m ade 141 at a critical tim e against the Sussex bow lin g at Portsm outh and so had a great deal to do with H am pshire’s success by nine w ickets. H is fine innings on the last- m entioned occasion aroused m uch enthu siasm and the spectators showed their ap preciation by su bscribing fourteen pounds for him . If Llew ellyn had belonged to a stronger county he w ould probably have m ade an even greater nam e for him self for the heavy w ork w hich has so fre quently fallen to his lot must occasionally have affected his play to no sm all extent.
