Cricket 1908

J u ly 2 3 , 1908 . CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 293 CR ICKET IN AUSTRAL IA . (Continued from page 211.) SUMMARY AND STATISTICS OF TH E PAST SEASON. The Australian season of 1907-8 was productive of much interesting cricket, the chief feature being the visit of an English team chosen by the M.CtC. As a review of the tour was published in these columns on April 30th, further reference need not be made to the subject here beyond saying that the trip proved dis appointing, as many as four of the Test matches being lost. From the statistics which follow it will be seen that only three batsmen— Hardstaff (1,360), Noble (1,071), and Armstrong (1,033)—made a thousand runs, and that the largest num ber of wickets taken by a bowler was 66, with which both J. N. Crawford and Saun ders were credited. Nothing at all was seen during the season of Mackay or Garnsey, and Duff, Diamond, and Hop kins quite failed to play up to their re putation. S. E. Gregory, however, after being left out of the State team, got back to his very best form and worked his way into the Test match side. He, as much as anyone, can look back upon the season with pleasure. New South Wales, after many years of uninterrupted supremacy, experienced a poor season, being beaten by England, South Australia, Victoria, and Queensland in turn. The other States did well, and many young players of pro mise came to the front. Australian bowl ing does not appear to be particularly strong at the present time, but great bowlers on Australian wickets are few. Rhodes, Blythe, and Tarrant were great bowlers in England in 1907, but in the Colonies were little better than moderate while the weather was fine. Fielder, Barnes, and J. N. Crawford were excel lent, yet their wickets on the whole were costly. In the event of a team from the Commonwealth visiting us next year, it will probably be found that there are other first-class bowlers in Australia than those who figured in the recent series of Test matches.
