The hom e side were seen to great advantage on Monday, scoring 358 in 285 m inutes and getting two Northants. w ickets dow n for 13 Charlesworth, hit ting a 6 and eleven 4’s, m ade 105 out o f 191 in 140 m inutes, driving with m uch pow er but being missed three tim es—the first when he bad m ade 7. With Baker he put 011 (50 for the third w icket and with L illey 113 for the fifth in SO m inutes. Baker scored 80 out of 150 in 110 m inutes and, like Charlesworth, hit eleven 4’s ; unlike that player, however, he did not have the good fortune to drive a ball through a w indow o f the dining-room . A fter the tea interval there was a collapse, Wells taking five w ickets for 33 rnns. Northants. at the end of the day scored 13 for the loss o f Freem an and H ardy. Play was not resum ed on the second day until 12 . 20 , on account of the state of the ground after heavy showers. Bus- w ell m ade a few good hits and P ool stayed w ith Vials w hile 35 w ere put on for the fourth w icket. The latter, w ho batted in capital style, reached 50 out of 88 in eighty m inutes and, alto gether, was at the w icket tw o hours and a-quarter for 71. K ingston showed good form for 31, but of the others only Wells reached double figures. W hen the visitors follow ed-on, 197 behind, Vials again played a useful innings, but w hen stum ps were drawn N orthants., w ith only four w ickets in hand, were still 106 runs behind. Played at Worcester on July 13, 14, and 15. Worcestershire won by 225 runs. W orcestershire, w ho placed a capital team in the field, com pleted an innings of 173 and got dow n tw o Gloucestershire w ickots for 21 on the opening day. The w icket, w ithout being difficult, always helped the bow lors a little. B y far the best innings of the day was played by G. N. Foster, w ho m ade 40 by vigorous and attactive cricket. Against Arnold and Sim pson-H ayw ard the innings was finished off on Tuesday m orning for 55, the last eight w ickets going dow n in an hour for 34. W hen the hom e team w ent in a second tim e Bow ley and H . K. Foster found little difficulty in run-getting. Together they made 74 for the first w icket, and Bow ley, who hit eleven 4’s, was second out at 121. Burns also scored freely, and, w ith A rnold and W. L. Foster adding 138 for the fifth w icket in 105 m inutes, the innings was declared closed w hen W orcestershire were 449 ahead. Arnold m ade his hundred in tw o hours w ithout a chance, and h it thirteen 4’s. Before stum ps were drawn Gloucestershire scored 24 w ithout loss. Yesterday, 011 a w icket w hich had been protected, B( ard and Dipper took the score to 68 before the first w icket fell. Salter played a free gam e for 51, but was mihsed w hen 13. O w ing to raiu and bad light play was restricted on Monday to three hours and three-quarters, during w hich tim e Sussex scored 247 for four w ickets. Fry and Vine rem ained together a couple of hours, m aking 129 for the first w icket before the latter was sent back for a flawless innings. K illick scored quickly and the Jam Sahib m ade 33 out of 52 in 35 m inutes. Fry, fourth out at 247, batted 220 m inutes for 119 ; he scored w ell to the on and hit nine 4’s, but was m issed by Goodland at long-on off Cranfield when he had m ade 25. Robert R elf scored freely on Tuesday and, in partnership w ith Luther, pu t on 109 for the sixth w icket in 55 m inutes. H e made his excellent 85 in an hour and a-quarter and hit a dozen 4' b . Somerset, going in against a total of 404, lost three w ickets for 19 runs prior to lunch. The fourth w icket put on 41, but after Palairet’s dis m issal at 70 the end soon cam e, the w hole side being out for 94. W oods m ade som e good hits and alone showed any confidence. In the follow -on L ew is and Poyntz added 40 together, but no-one else reached double figures and Sussex w on very easily.
