Hampshire won by nine wicket?. W ith Pool, K night, and East away, the visitors were n ot at full strength, but, seeing that they obtained a lead of 24 on the first innings, their defeat by as m uch as nine w ickets cam e som ew hat as a surprise. They lost half their w ickets for 60 runs, b u t the total eventually reached 203, Driffield and H ardy adding 64 for the last partnership in 65 m inutes. Rain set in soon after H am pshire had com m enced batting, and w ith 25 scored for the loss of Bow ell stum ps Were draw n for the day. No play was possible 011 Friday, but a definite result was nevertheless arrived at on the third day. Sprot batted 25 m inutes for 30 runs and Johnston 65 for 31. A t lunch tim e, w ith nine w ickets dow n for 179, the innings was declared closed, although Northants. w ere leading b y 24. The m ove proved very suc cessful, Northants. losing their first three w ickets at 11 and their fourth a run later. In 80 m inutes the entire sido w ere disposed of for 60, Mead taking seven w ickets for IS runs. H am pshire, set 85 to w in, lost Johnston at 3, but, Sprot playing a splen did gam e, Ihe rem aining runs were obtained w ithout further loss. Sprot m ade 62 of the last 83 runs in 50 m inutes, hitting tw o 6 s and eight 4’s D uring the a ternoon play was suspended for 10 m inutes during the funeral of Mr. E. L. Edc.
