The latter m ade 125 out of 316 in 175 m inutes and hit a 5 and nineteen 4’s, the m ajority of them fine strokes to the off. Spring m ade 41 in three-quarters of an hour, but, Thom pson taking five of the last six w ickets for 25 runs, the innings closed for 377. Northants. lost Kingston at 7, but by the end of the day had m ade 96 for three w ickets, Vials and Knight adding 57 together in 35 m inutes. Pool was caught at the w icket w ith 10 runs added, and Thom pson and Cox looked like m aking a stand when, at 121, the latter received a severe blow on the jaw from a ball bow led b y H itch and w as obliged to retire. Thom pson batted steadily for 95 m inutes for his 24, and the total was taken to 205 before the last w icket fell. H itch took six of the w ickets for 99 runs. In the follow -on K ingston and Vials again w ent in first. They gave the side a good start, putting up 72 ere the latter was lbw . K ingston played adm irably for 105 m inutes for 76 and K night also battod w ell for 70 m inutes, but no one eh e reached double-figures, the batting being very weak. After Jon 2 s had been bowled at 4 and Irem onger caught at the w icket at 10, Hardstaff and Gunn added 36 and the latter and Turner 49. Gunn, fifth out, at 119, gave tw o chances during the tw o hours he was in. Payton and Alletson added 69 in 45 minutes, but no one else reached double figures, the innings closing for 197. W ith only 3 added both W right and Need­ ham were lost to D erbyshire. M orton played steadily and at the end of the day carried out his bat for 30 in a total of 101 for seven wickets. On Tuesday the innings closed for 121, leaving M orton to carry out his bat for 40, made out o f 118 in 60 minutes. By very even scoring Notts, m ade 182 in their second innings in three hours, eight o f the eleven reaching duuble figures, and Derbyshire, set 259 to win, scored 76 w ithout loss (W right and Needham) by the time stumps were drawn. A t one tim e it appeared unlikely that so large a total w ould be made, for the fourth w icket fell at 85. Mead, however, cam e to the rescue, scoring 110 out of 186 in three hours w ithout a chance and hitting eight 4’s : w ith Stone he put on 71 in 65 m inutes and w ith Rem nant 81 in 85. The last tw o w ickets added 88 in three-quarters of an hour. On Tuesday everything w as dw arfed b y the splen­ did innings of C raw ford, w ho, hitting fou r 6 ’s and tw enty-four 4’s, m ade 170 out of 274 in 160 m inutes. In m aking his highest score in first- class cricket, he offered only one chance— to M ead low down at m id-off when 150. Jayes, hit­ tin g ten 4’s in his faultless 77, helped to add 231 for the sixth w icket in tw o hours, after half the side had been disposed o f for 80 in an hour and 20 m inutes.
