J u ly 9, 1908. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 261 OX FO RD UN IVERSITY v. Mr. H. D .G . LEVESON -GOWER ’S X I. Played at Eastbourne on July 2, 3 and 4. H e a v y S c o r i n g . Drawn. Salter received another trial in this match for O xford, taking the place of Robinson, w ho was resting. Neither side was strong in bow ling, and over a thousand runs had been made b y the tim e each side had com pleted an innings. On the first day the U niversity scored 539 in five hours and a- quarter, and on the second Leveson-Gower’s team replied w ith 423 for nine in five and a-half hours. Teesdale and Bruce sent up 237 for the first O xford w icket in 165 m inutes, the latter, who was tw ice m issed—w hen 25 by Branston off his ow n bow ling, and w hen 58 b y Crawford off Udal, then being run out for 105, an innings w hich contained fourteen 4’s, the m ajority of them drives. W right was bow led at 250 and Bow ring caught 19 later. Teesdale was fourth out, having m ade 149 out of 291 in 200 m inutes ; he m ade his runs all round the w icket, hit a 5 and fifteen 4’s, and offered only one chance—to Palm er in the long-field w hen 128. After the fall of the fifth w icket at 317 Foster and Salter put on 95 in 35 m inutes, the form er hitting tw enty 4’s and m aking his 101 out of ]43 b y chanceless cricket in an hour ; he pulled very finely, and at one period of his innings h it eight 4’s off nine consecutive balls bowled to him . Salter m ado 03 in 80 m inutes, and H atfeild played a hard-hit innings of 59. There were three individual hundreds but only one three- figure partnership in the innings. Levcson-Gower’s X I., after losing tw o w ickets for 59, scored freely, Branston and Drucc adding 133 in 100 m inutes. The total, however, was only 218 when the sixth w icket fell. The captain, fortunately, was in his best form , and was well supported b y W eigall and M olineux, the form er helping him to add 108 for the seventh w icket in 85 m inutes, and the latter 128 for the last in an hour and a-quarter. Leveson-Gower m ade 112 out of 248 in three hours, hitting eleven fours, and offering only one chance—to Foster in the slips w hen 109. A fter W right had been caught at 13, Bow ring and Bruce added 138 for the U niversity’s second w icket in an hour and a-half, being then caught by Udal off consecutive balls from Branston. H alf the side w ere out for 167, and, the last five w ickets going dow n for 55, Leveson-G ow er’s XI. were left 2S6 to win. Branston took six w ickets for 79 runs, and nine in the m atch, though at a som ewhat heavy cost. Six w ickets w ent dow n for 50, but U dal and Druce played out tim e, adding 20. Warwickshire won by six wickets. Neither side was at full strength for this m atch, W arwickshire being w ithout Lilley, w ho was playing at L ord’s, and Hargreave, w ho had an injured knee, and the visitors lacking the services of Sprot, Wyatt., H ill and W hite. Ham pshire gave a very poor dis may on a perfect w icket, losing half their wickets :for 78 and being all out for 146. Stone show ed strong defence for 50 m inutes and added 48 w ith Rem nant, but the others did little service. Field took six w ickets and Foster was decidedly useful, w hilst the fielding was of a high standard. Kinneir, playing faultless cricket and hitting six 4’s, stayed with Quaife an hour and a-quarter w hilst 129 runs were m ade for the first w icket. Baker, having m ade 2, w as caught at m id-on, and Fishwick was out off the last ball of the day, w hen the total was 150 for three w ickets, Quaife not out 02. On Friday the hist- nam ed and Santall added 54 in 50 m inutes, and Glover also proved a useful partner, though lie was m issed by Rem nant at slip w hen 2 and at the w icket w hen 13. Quaife m ade eleven 4’s and batted four hours for his faultless 104. The last four w ickets fell for 23, leaving W arwickshire w ith a lead of 70. Glover, w ho carried out his bat for a lu cky 57, hit four 4’s. Ham pshire again m ade a bad start, losing Jephson at 18, Mead at 30, and Llew ellyn at 52. Then Johnston, w ho had gone in first, was joined by Stone and the pair doubled the score in 45 m inutes. Johnston was sixth out for a chanceless 74, w hich lasted 145 m inutes and contained five 4’s. A t the end of the day the score was 195 for six w ickets, Rem nant being 30 not out and Persse 20. On Satur day the latter added no m ore and the form er only 4, but B adcock and Newm an, h itting up 24 for the last w icket, set W arwickshire 52 to w in, a num ber they lost four w ickets in obtaining.
