H ayw ard and H obbs gave Surrey an excellent start, sending the hundred up together for the th ird tim e in su ccession ; they m ade 104 in 65 m inutes before HobbSj w ho hit seven 4’s, w as caught at cover-point. Ducat failed, but M arshal continued the good w ork, though w hen 36 had been added he lost H ayw ard, w ho had m ade 69 out c f 149 in tw o hours and a-quarter b y faultless cr ic k e t; he h it five 4’s and w as stum ped through the ball rebounding off the w icket-keeper’s pads. M arshal m ade 50 out of 81 in an hour, h ittin g seven 4’s, but he w as let off at the w icket (by Sm ith) w hen 3. C raw ford com m enced his in ­ nings slow ly, bu t h it hard la te r: he scored his first 16 runs in an hour and his last 34 in 30 m inutes. H itch m ade som e good hits, and the innings, after lasting fou r hours and a-half closed fo r 339. B y the end o f the day W arw ick­ shire had m ade 43 w ithout loss, K inneir being 28 not out. The cricket w as dreadfully slow on the follow in g m orning, and only 24 runs w ere m ade in the first hour. K inneir, having m ade 60 out of 104 in 155 m inutes, w as first o u t : he h'it seven 4’s. B aker, Charlesw orth, and Santall did little, but L illey batted w ell and m ade som e good hits. A t 172 Q uaife w as caught in the slips a fter b attin g 230 m inutes and h it­ tin g six 4’s : he was terribly slow at tim es and it w as a relief w hen he w as out. The last few w ickets fell qu ickly, leaving Surrey w ith a lead o f 112. In th e last 80 m inutes o f the day the hom e side m ade 83 for the loss of one w icket. H ayw ard and H obbs m ade 47 together, and then the form er, w ho carried out his bat fo r 50, played out tim e w ith D ucat. Y esterday Ducat was bow led at 126, but M arshal and H ayw ard put on 92 fo r th e th ird w icket before the latter was (taught. H ayw ard batted 150 m inutes and hit eleven 4’s, but w as m issed w hen 7 and 76. M arshal played freely, and took m any risks, his ob ject bein g to make runs as qu ick ly as p o ssib le : he hit eight 4’s du rin g the 75 m inutes he w as in. Buchanan bow led C hinnery and D ruce w ith consecutive balls, sending a bail 33 yards and breaking the off-stum p w hen dism issing the form er. A t the end of the day B ranston and W eigall put on 54 w ithout bein g separated. Branston w as dis­ m issed in the first over on the second m orning, and it w as very largely due to Sayen, w ho hit five 4’s, and K eigw in, w ho put on 42 for the last w icket, that the total reached 229. The chief feature of the U n iversity’s second innings was the b attin g of Y oun g, w ho m ade 84 out of 145 in 90 m inutes w ithout a ch a n ce : he hit thirteen 4’s. A t the end o f the day Ireland, w ho w as aw arded his Blue, played out tim e w ith M acleod, the pair adding 137 in partnership. Y esterday Ireland and M aclcod stayed together until they had put on 246 fo r the seventh w icket in 130 m inutes. Ireland gave no chance, but M acleod w as m issed fou r tim es; the form er hit tw enty 4’s and the la tter seventeen. U pon the dism issal o f Ireland the innings w as closed, leaving M r.
