K ent lost M arsham and H ardinge at 37, and, although Seym our and W oolley added 57 in 40 m inutes, h alf the side were out fo r 134. H um phreys and H utchings, how ever, put on 82 iu 70 m inutes, the latter m aking his 71 out of 122 in 100 m inutes w ithout a chance and hitting seven 4’s, w hilst later F airservice helped to add 100 in an hour fo r the eighth w icket. H um phreys m ade his 111 out of 233 in 165 m inutes and hit thirteen 4’s, offering only one chance— to W ood in the long-field off Coe when 30. The innings of 367 lasted just under five hours, and in the last few m inutes of the day the hom e side scored five runs fo r the loss of W ood’s w icket. In F ielder’s first over on Tues­ day K night and K in g w ere dism issed, but W hitehead played a good innings and found tw o very useful partners in Coe and Jayes, who helped to add 73 for th e fourth w icket in an hour and 41 for the sixth in 40 m inutes re­ spectively. W hitehead gave no chance during the 130 m inutes he w as in, and hit a 6 and eleven 4’s. The tail-end did w ell, but the innings closed fo r 220. In the last tw o hours of the day K ent m ade 181 fo r five w ickets, and at the draw ing o f stum ps w ere 328 runs on. On W ed­ nesday the last five w ickets added only 28, but L eicestershire were set 357 to w in. W ith Turner and Fane aw ay from Essex, and D erbyshire w ithout L aw ton, neither side was at fu ll strength. Essex lost Freem an at 21 and P errin at 37, but D ouglas played w ell and m ade 72 out of 157 in 170 m inutes w ithout a m istake, ere being out to a good catch at p o in t; he hit nine 4’s and played a sound defensive gtune. In three hours and a-half, how ever, the w hole side w ere out fo r 203— a poor score in the circum stances. D erbyshire m ade a fine start, Needham and W right scoring 101 together in 80 m inutes fo r the first w icket. W righ t w as then caught at the w icket for a vigorous 68 , w hich included a dozen 4’s. A t the end o f the day the score w as 121 fo r one w icket. On Tuesday, when M orton was caught, the second w icket had added 55. Essex, it should be said, w ere han­ dicapped ow ing to the absence of Buckenham , w ho was too unw ell to play. Cadm an played a very useful gam e and put on 70 for the third w icket w ith Needham , w ho m ade his 50 in 125 m inutes. The latter w as seen to great advantage and m ade his 104 in 185 m inutes w ithout a cloanee: he hit fourteen 4’s. T he last seven w ickets added only 102 runs, but the hom e side, nevertheless, obtained a lead of 125 on the innings. W hen Essex w ent in again M cGahey and P errin put on 85, after w hich the latter and Freem an rem ained together fo r an hour, playin g out tim e. Y esterday the overnight not­ outs rem ained together until their stand for the fifth w icket had realised 107. The others did little and D erbyshire were set only 147 to win. Tyldesley, who had a dam aged thum b, and W orsley, w hilst N otts still lacked the services of John Gunn. W hitehead, of the second eleven, w as tried for th e hom e side, and batted very w ell at the end of the first day. Irem onger was dism issed by the first ball sent down, B rearley at the sam e tim e taking his 100th w ioket of the season, he being the first bowler to achieve the feat. Jones, Gunn, and H ard­ staff, the chief scorers for N otts, were all missed^ The tw o last-nam ed put on 51 together in 35 m inutes, Gunn battin g an hour and three- quarters for 46. A lletson afterw ards made a few good hits, but the total reached only 177. Spooner played a very good innings for Lan­ cashire : opening the innings, he w as fourth out at 73 for 30, m ade in 80 m inutes. M acLaren batted tho sam e tim e, scoring 46 out of 76 made w hilst in, and h ittin g seven 4’s. A fter the fall of the sixth w icket at 117, H ornby and W hite­ head added 65 w ithout being parted in the last 40 m inutes of the day. On F riday the not-outs rem ained together until they had put on 188 together in tw o hours and a quarter for the seventh w icket. H ornby was then caught for an in nings of 80, w hich took 155 m inutes to make. W hen the innings, after taking five hours and a quarter, closed for 352, W hitehead, w hose first m atch it was for Lancashire, carried out his b^t for a very m eritorious 131, in w hich were sixteen 4’s. A gain st Brearley, N otts lost four w ickets for 46 runs in their second innings, but A lletson and Gunn put on 61 together, and the latter and Jones 81. Gunn batted 110 m inutes w ithout a m istake and hit ten 4’s, whilst Jones hit eleven 4’s du rin g the hour and a-half he was in. W hitehead, put on to bow l w hilst Jones was in, was no-baled for dou btful delivery four tim es in an over by Brow n, and was at once taken off. A t the end of the day Notts, w ith tw o w ickets in hand, were 141 runs on. Yesterday the l$st tw o w ickets added 57, and Lancashire w ent in to get 199 to w in. (The stand by H allam and T aylor realised 119 in 70 m inutes). Spooner was caught at 45, but Sharp and H artley rem ained together until 98.
