A s the result of som e very level crick et, six­ teen w ickets w ent dow n on M onday for 285 runs. L ord H aw ke reappeared for Y orkshire, fo r w hich county B ooth m ade his debut. Som erset lost Braund and Capt. P oyntz in th e first over for 3 runs, and, notw ithstanding: a partnership of 44 by L ew is and W hittle, six w ickets fell in 70 m inutes fo r 52 runs. D aniell and B anks then m ade a fine resistance, p u ttin g on 61 in 65 m inutes, the form er b attin g steadily and w ell • fo r 130 m inutes before being out to a very good catch at short-leg. The in nings closed lo r 160, and, in response, Y orkshire m ade 125 fo r six w ickets du rin g the rest of the day. O f the 68 runs added in 37 m inutes fo r the second w icket w ith M yers, D enton claim ed as m any as 5 3: he hit eleven 4’s and played free and very sound cricket. On the second m orning, w hen the eighth w icket fell at 144, it seem ed likely that there w ould be little betw een the sides on the innings, but H irst upset all such calculations by m aking 58: w ith Bates he put on 63 in 50 m inutes, and w ith H aw ke 33 in 25. H e took 95 m inutes to score 58 and h it eleven 4’s. The in nings closed fo r 240, leavin g Som erset 80 behind. . T he scoring was very uneven, only three players reaching double figures for the ’V arsity and but fou r fo r th e hom e side. Bruce and Teesdale m ade 73 fo r the first w icket, the latter, playing very steadily, takin g 70 m inutes to score 27. B ow rin g m ade his 51 out of 77 in an hour and a q uarter b y vigorous crick et, cu ttin g and driving w ell, and h ittin g nine 4’s. The first w icket of the hom e side put on 43in 40 m inutes, but h a lf the side w ere out fo r 61. Tarrant, going In late, m ade 35 out o f 55 in 45 m inutes, and w ith H earne put on 24 for the ninth w icket. R obinson, bow lin g ata great pace, took six w ickets fo r 90. G oing in the second tim e, O xford lost B ruce at 6 and Foster at 13, and, when play ceased, were 39 runs on w ith eight w ickets in hand. On the second m orning Teesdale, hav­ in g batted 85 m inutes, w as fifth out at 68 . A fter the sixth w icket had fallen at 78, H urst and R obinson added 20 in 10 m inutes, the total reaching 131, leaving the hom e side 148 to win. W ynyard w as bow led at 17, but the Jam played b rig h t crick et and m ade 31 out of 44 in half an hour ere being lbw . F oster failed to score, but T arrant and Lee put the result of the m atch beyond doubt by adding 84 for the fourth in 50 m inutes. A fter the last-nam ed’s dism issal K ey and T arrant hit off the rem aining runs w ithout further loss. Barnett, Langdon, and D ipper for 21, w hilst Jessop, a fter being m issed when 4 and again just afterw ards, was bow led at 45. A t th o same total Board also w as bow led, and it wras due to D ennett and C. Barnett, who added 50 fo r the eighth w icket, that the total reached 114. W ells took the last three w ickets in the course of an over w ithout a run being m ade off him . 44 w ere m ade before th e first w icket o f the visitors fell, and, thanks to a stand o f 40 by T hom pson and Norm an, and a good innings o f 27 by K night, the total, b y the end o f the day, had been taken to 140 fo r eight w ickets. The last tw o w ickets adding but 8 runs, the visitors’ lead w as restricted to 34. G louces­ tershire gave a m uch-im proved display in their second innings and setN orthants 338 to win. Board and L angdon pu t on 68 togetherand the brothers B arnett played useful in nings, but the sixth w icket fell at 174. Then Brow nlee and Jessop put on 111 for tho seventh w icket ii^ an hour, of w hich num ber the form er, who hit a 6 and fourteen 4’s, olaim ed 87.
