J u ly 2 , 1908 . CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORb O f THE GAME. 24? M .C.C. AN D GROUND v . CAMBRIDGE UN IVER S ITY . Played at Lord’s on June 25, 26 and 27. Cambridge University won by two wickets. The hom e side com m enced badly, losing the w ickets o f K in g, B ird, L lew ellyn, and Y . F. S. Craw ford fo r 27. M agnay and the Jam of N aw anagar put on 30 fo r the fifth w icket, and the form er and H ubble 48 fo r the ninth in 25 m inutes, the total eventually reaching 186. M ag nay, m issed by M ann when 11, scored 73 in 140 m inutes and h it a 5 and eigh t 4’s. Young and Buchanan m ade 37 in 20 m inutes for the U n i versity’s first w icket, but, although Falcon .stayed 65 m inutes and scored 36, half the s :de w ere out fo r 101. M acleod and M ugliston m ade a tim ely stand and added 66 in 40 m inutes, so that when play closed Cam bridge, w ith tw o w ickets in hand, w ere 22 runs on. On F riday the innings closed for 232, King- m aking his analysis in to one o f seven lo r 77. The M.C.C. m ade light o f the ’V arsity’s lead, K in g and B ird sending 1 up 86 together in an hour. K ing, w ho hit seven 4’s anil batted 00 m inutes, was third out, at 121 , for a freely-hit 60, w hich con tained only one chance— to G oodw in at point when 40. Llew ellyn, who m ade 51 in an hour and a-quarter by faultless crick et and hit eight 4’s, and C raw ford put on 94 for the fourth w icket in 65 m inutes, and, a fter the Jam had been dis missed fo r 10, H ubble kept Craw ford com pany w hilst 59 were added in 40 m inutes. Craw ford, eighth out at 305, m ade his 87 in 140 m inutes w ithout a chance, m aking m any excellent cuts and off drives. There was a b rig h t display at the end of the innings, Colem an and R attigan h itting up 65 fo r the last w icket in 27 m inutes. C am bridge, left 325 to w in, lost Young at 17, and at the end of the day had one w icket down for 32. On Saturday W righ t was lbw at 63 and M ugliston bow led at 76, K in g taking both w ickets. F alcon and Buchanan, during the 50 m inutes th ey were together, pu t on 73 fo r the fourth w icket before the latter, w ho drove w ell, was caught at slip. Falcon then found an ex cellent partner in B aily, w hose batting, if not very attractive, was certainly useful. Falcon reached 50 in 75 m inutes and 100 in 115, m aking altogether 122 out of 194 in 140 m inutes w ith only one chance— a hot one to K in g off his own bowling- w hen 80; he hit w ell all round the w icket and m ade fifteen 4’s. H is stand with B aily had resulted in 108 being added fo r the fifth w icket. M acleod, having m ade a couple, was caught, and at 291 B aily, a fter batting 110 m inutes fo r 36, was taken at the w ick et; his innings was a very valuable one, but he was m issed at th e w icket off K in g when he had made a single. W hen the eighth w icket fell 33 were still required, and, ow ing to G oodw in’ s fine hitting at a critica l tim e, the runs were m ade w ithout fu rth er loss. I t was a very good per form ance indeed on the part o f the U niversity to m ake as m any as 327 in the last innings, although th e bow ling against them w as not strong.
