Langdon, B arnett, and B oard were all out for 10, and at 37 H ollow ay w as caught at the w ioket. W ith Jessop and H uggin s together a great im provem ent took place, the latter acting strictly in the defensive, w hilst his partner hit. Jessop m ade 50 out o f 56 in 45 m inutes, shortly after w hich H uggins hit Y ine fo r fo u r'4 ’s in an over and Jessop punished the sam e bow ler for 22 (five 4’s and a 2), also in an over. The latter reached 102 out of 135 in 95 m inutes, 150 out of 187 in 115, and, in all. m ade 164 out of 204 in tw o hours. H e hit east and west, m ade th irty 4’s, and offered only one chance— to V incett at m id- off when 27. H uggins batted very patiently for 110 m inutes, rendering good service to his side. The ninth w icket fell at 234, and then D ipper and Dennett in 80 m inutes actually put on 112 for the last partnership. The form er h it eight 4 ’s and offered no chance, w h ilst the latter, who also h it eigh t 4’s, m ight have been caught in tho long-field by the younger R e lf when 49. The innings o f 346 lasted fou r hours and a-half. At tho end o f the day Sussex m ade 36 w ithout loss, but on the n ext m orning lost R . R . R e lf and Vine for 45. K illick and the elder R e lf added 72, but half the side w ere out fo r 144. R elf m ade 138 out o f 256 in three hours and a-quarter, but was m 'ssed three tim es— w hen 36, 64, and 130. He m ade runs all round the w icket and hit a 5 and tw enty-one 4’s. L each m ade 27 in 18 m inutes, h ittin g five 4’s and a 3, and the last tw o w ickets added 85, the last y ieldin g 48 in 20 m inutes. G loucestershire, in th eir second inn ings, lost B arnett w ithout a run, Langdon at 22, and H uggins at 61. Jessop then w ent in and o f the 56 added in 20 m inutes w ith D ipper for the fourth w icket was responsible fo r 39. The latter and H ollow ay put on 23 w ithout further loss b y the end o f the day, w hen fou r w ickets were down fo r 140. D ipper batted tw o hours and a-half w ithout a m istake fo r his 64 and hit nine 4’s. P arker did little, but B oard, who played steadily, and Dennett took the total to 284, when the innings w as closed, leaving Sussex 330 to get in 230 m inutes. D ennett m ade five 4’s off an over from D w yer and scored 31 runs in ten m inutes. Two w ickets fell fo r 51, but V ine and K illick rem ained together ju st over tw o hours, pu tting on 109. Foster, a useful batsm an and slow left- hand bow ler from H all Green, m ade his dbbut for W arw ickshire in this m atch and obtained six w ickets. A fter Q uaife had been bow led at 37, K inneir and Baker added 166 fo r the second w icket in 160 m inutes, the form er then being run out in an unfortunate m an n er: Baker hit back a ball w hich rebounded off K inneir to the bow ler, M orton, w ho put down the wicket, the batsm an at his end being out of his ground. K inneir m ade 97 out o f 203 in three hours and a-quarter w ithout a chance and hit eight 4’s. Baker, who was m issed a t slip when 90, was in 225 m inutes for 119, in w hich were ten 4’s. A t the end o f the day, as the result o f steady cricket, five w ickets w ere down for 331 runs. On F riday the last five w ickets w ent dow n for 97, F ishw ick, who h it ten 4’s and m ade som e very fine drives, ca rryin g out his bat fo r 75; when 65 he was m issed at slip by Law ton, but m ade no other m istake The total of 428 took six hours and a-half to com pile. The hom e side fared so badly that in three hours and a half they were all disposed o f fo r 185. O livier and W arren added 54 for the sixth w icket in 45 m in utes, and R ickm an played a useful gam o for 27. In the follow -on H um phries and R ickm an w ere sent back for 18. but Law ton helped W right to add 69 fo r the th ird w icket in 35 m inutes, after w hich the latter and Needham put on 70 in an hour and a-quarter fo r the fourth, w hich fell at 157. M orton also did w ell, but chief interest centred in W right, w ho batted 170 m in utes w ithout a m istake fo r 111. The last few w ickets fe ll quickly before Foster, w ho, upon goin g on fo r the second tim e, took four w ickets for 9 runs.
