On Thurdsay only 263 runs were m ade in this m atch fo r the loss o f thirteen w ickets during the five hours and a-quarter play w as in pro­ gress. The scoring w as very slow, but the bow l­ in g and fielding were good. A t 23 H irst w as caught at third m an, and w hen M yers w as ou t to a fine low catch at second slip five wickets w ere down in 40 m inutes fo r 35. W ith the total unchanged D enton should have been caught b y Jones at slip. T he m iss, as it happened, proved very ex ­ pensive, for Denton rem ained to score 77 out of 121 in tw o hours ; he h it nine 4’s and added 73 for the sixth w icket w ith R othery in an hour. N ew steid batted steadily fo r 70 m inutes and the total eventually reached 179. N olts lost Jones, G eorge Gunn, and Irem on ger in an hour fo r 57, after w hich H ardstaff and P ayton added 27 w ith ­ out being parted du rin g the rem aining 50 m in­ utes of the day. H irst, ow ing to a dam aged knee, bow led m edium -paced, but New stead, w ith seven w ickets for 68 , caused his handicap to be little felt. W hen Y orkshire w ent in the second tim e, W ass, ow ing to a blow re­ ceived on the foot from a ball from Newstead, was unable to bowl m ore than a few overs, N otts m issing his b ow lin g severely. R hodes and H ardisty m ade 81 togeth er fo r the first w icket in an hour and a-half, the form er pla yin g a faultless gam e but the latter offerin g tw o chances. Denton, w ho took 85 m inutes to score 24 not out, and W ilkinson put on 51 in an hour, the total when play ceased being 149 fo r three w ickets D uring the day only 272 runs were m ade on a good and true w icket in five hours and three-quarters. On Saturday Y orksh ire’s fifth w icket fell at 163, but R othery and H irst added 57 fo r the sixth and the latter and N ew ­ stead 154 w ithout a separation bein g effected. H irst w as very slow at tim es, and Newstead, seeing that he w as m issed before m aking a run, and again when 16, w as very lu cky indeed to reach three-figures. W ith six w ickets down fo r 374 the closure w as applied, absurdly late in the day, leaving N otts 334 to w in. In 35 m inutes Irem onger, Jones, and H ardstaff were out fo r 17, but G unn and P ayton m ade the side secure by rem aining together 45 m inutes. In beautiful w eather on the first day twenty w ickets fell for 290 runs, a heavy dew m aking the ball get up badly du ring the innings of Lan­ cashire, who won the toss. H artley, alone of the early batsm en, show ed much confidence, and when he was caught at slip four w ickets were down fo r 48. M acLaren played the best and largest innings o f the day, hitting five 4's in scoring 48 out o f 89 in 85 m inutes; w ith Make- peaee he put on 53 for the fifth w icket in 35 m inutes. O f the others Dean alone reached double figures, the innings, after lasting two hours and a half, closing for 154. Som erset lost B raund to the second ball sent down, and with only. 12 scored W hittle was caught at short-slip. Hobson, m issed by Spooner before he had scored and again when 7, stayed in 65 m inutes for 11, and in partnership w ith Captain P oyntz added 34 for the th ird w icket. D aniel m ade a very useful 18, but the best stand of the innings was by Lew is and Banks, who put on 41 for the eighth w icket in lialf-an-hour. Lew is m ade his 45 out o f 68 in an hour, and hit a 6 (off Brearley) and three 4’s. The in nings of 136 lasted tw o hours and three-quarters. On Friday 433 runs were m ade for 18 w ickets and L an­ cashire, ou t playing their opponents at all points, won very easily by 385 runs. H artley and Spooner made 88 for the first w icket in 65 m in­ utes and Tyldesley and Sharp 76 for the third in fifty. The latter played a fine innings of 136 out o f 257 in 150 m inutes, hitting freely all round the w icket and m aking tw enty-five 4’ s; when 3 he m ight have been stum ped, and when he had m ade 53 he w as m issed by W hittle at point. W ith M acLaren he put on 101 fo r the fourth w icket in an hour and w ith M akepeace 80 for the fifth. M acLaren, w ho w as m issed at cover when 36 by R obson off a skyer, h it a 6 and eigh t 4’s du ring the 55 m inutes he was in. W hen 400 had been m ade for eight w ickets in four hours and a-half, the innings was declared closed, leaving Som erset 419 to w in. The order of g oin g in was changed w ith disastrous results. The only double figure was m ade by E. S. M. P oyntz, who, goin g in first w icket down, was last out for 19. O w ing to an in jured hand Captain Poyntz w as unable to bat. They lost Fane at 28 and D ouglas at 47, and, although P errin and M cG ahey m ade a good stand, the third w ioket fell at 99. M cG ahey w as in fo r an hour and three-quarters for 39, and in partnership w ith G illingham put on 58 fo r the fourth w icket, w hich fell at 157. U pon Turner join in g G illin g ­ ham a fine stand was m ade, the fifth w icket p ro­ du cing 133 in 125 m inutes. G illingham reached 50 in 100 m inutes and scored 102 out o f 191 in 185 m inutes w ithout a ch an ce; he h it a dozen 4’s and drove w ith great pow er. W ith Turner and F aviell together 35 were added w ithout loss b y the end o f the day, though the form er was m issed by T arrant in the slips w hen he had m ade 49. On F riday the last five w ickets added only 74 in 65 m inutes. Turner left in the first over, after batting 155 m inutes fo r 82, in w hich were tw o 5’s and seven 4’s ; he hit to leg and cut w ell and offered only the one chance m entioned. The innings of 399 lasted about six hours and a-half. W arner played a fine gam e w hen M iddlesex w ent in. W ith T arrant he m ade 59 in 45 m inutes, w ith P ayne 136 in 80, and w ith Bosanquet 78 in 45. Payne drove capitally, offered no chance, and hit ten 4’s. W arner, third out, at 273, m ade his runs all round the w icket and scored 120 out of 273 in 170 m inu tes; he h it sixteen 4’s and offered only one chance— to P errin , low dow n in the slips, w hen 76. Essex, 33 behind on the innings, showed very unenterprising crick et when they w ent in the second tim e, although M ignon was away ow ing to a dam aged knee, and T arrant, on account of in disposition, was an absentee until the interval.
