Cricket 1908

226 CR ICK ET : A W EEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J u n e 25, 1908. A s is usual in such circum stances, there was a hush of expectancy as the fieldsman stood w aitin g for the ball. Just at the critical m om ent, a small b oy ’s voice piped forth, “ M iss it, A rchie, and I ’ll let you kiss m y sis te r!” T h e fieldsman for tunately succeeded in con trolling his feel ings and in m akin g the catch, but we w onder what would have happened had he m issed the ball. It m ay be taken for granted that the small boy would have had good reason for not w ishing to carry out his suggestion. N o good purpose would be served by setting forth lon g tables o f averages to show what M r. M acLaren has done in first-class cricket, for he is one o f those players w hose value to a side it is utterly impossible to determ ine by a perusal of statistics, no m atter how cleverly m anipu lated. T h e m ajority o f his greatest per form ances have been accom plished on fiery and sticky w ickets, when to m ake twenty or thirty has often proved equal to scoring a hundred in ordinary circum stances. His strong back play and pow erful driving are very noticeable on slow w ickets, whilst his foot w ork is a m odel o f w hat such should be. English cricket has produced few finer cricketers than the subject of these few rem arks, and that he m ay be destined to assist Lancashire for several years to com e must be the wish o f all those who follow the fortunes o f the gam e.
