Frederick Arthur Stanley, 16th Earl of Derby, who died suddenly at H olw ood, Kent, on Sunday evening last, had been for many years Vice-President o f the L anca shire County C .C . H e w as born in London on January 15th. 1841. M r . J. L . H a r d m a n . Mr. John L. H ardm an, whose death occurred at Philadelphia (P a.) on M ay 26th, was a Canadian by birth and played for several years w ith the H aarlem C .C . and the N ew Y ork Veteran 'Cricketers* A sso ciation. H e served as a Volunteer in the Red R iver E xpedition, for which he re ceived the V ictoria Cross, and also in the Fenian uprising. H e w as in his sixty-first year at the tim e o f his death. F .F .K . M r . M . T . M a r t in . Mr. M arcus Trevelyan Martin w as born at B arrackpore, in India, on April 29th, 1842, and was educated at R u gb y, where he w as in the Eleven from 1858 to 1861. The School possessed m any fine players just about that time, and am on g those who played with him against M arlborough in i860 were B. B. C ooper, E. R utter, C. Booth, and F. R . Evans. H is batting must have been very g o o d before he went up to C am bridge, for in 1861, his last year at R u gb y, he w as chosen to assist the Gentlemen of the N orth against the Gentle men o f the South at the O val. H e showed that he w as w orthy of appearing in such com pany by playing an innings of 63. H e obtained his Blue as a Freshman in 1862, but m ade only 13 against O xford, although earlier in the season he had scored 103 not out against a C am bridgeshire side which included the fam ous Buttress. In 1864 he made 53 v. M .C .C . at Fenner’s and 90 v. Surrey at the O val, but again proved a disappointment in the L o rd ’s m atch, scor in g only 3 runs in his tw o innings. In 1870 he appeared for M iddlesex, and occa sionally his nam e will be found in the W a r wickshire Eleven. M r. H avgarth described him as a g ood and safe bat and a fair wicket-keeper.
