J une 18, 1908. CR ICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 221 S O M E R S E T v. H A M P S H IR E . Played at Bath on June 15, 16 and 17. Hampshire won by nine wickets. V. T. H ill, after an absence of six years, reappeared for Som erset, but Ham pshire were obliged to take the field w ithout A. J. L. H ill. The visitors lost Mead at slip at 18, but Llew ellyn, after being m issed at the w icket w hen 2 rem ained w hilst 60 were added in 55 m inutes. Bow ell should have been caught at the w icket w hen 4 and by Hill at slip off Lewis w hen 13 and, as it happened the m istakes proved very costly. Sprot played bright cricket, m aking 14 in an over off Lewis and helping to add 44 for the third w icket in 20 m inutes. Bowell, after his tw o escapes, played a sound gam e and com pleted 50 by m eans of a 6 off Cranfield. Rem nant, though m aking only 27, stayed w ith Bow ell w hilst 70 were put on and Langford also played a useful gam e. Bow ell scored his 156 out of 259 in 185 m inutes, and h it a 6 and tw enty-tw o 4’s ; he gave no chance after m aking 13. The innings realised 286 and in reply Som erset scored 86 for 4 w ickets in an hour and a-quarter b y the end of the day. Rain fell in the early m orning and it was not until 2.20 that play could be resum ed. Daniell was caught off the first ball sent dow n, and, although Robson, W hittle, and H ill reached double-figures, Som erset just failed to save the follow -on, the innings closing for 135. W yatt bow led w ith m uch effect, his six w ickets costing only 31 runs. In their second innings the hom e side lost half their w ickets by the end of the day for 117, Braund m ak ing 29 and Palairet carrying out his bat for 51, m ade in an hour and a-quarter. On W ednesday rain pre vented any play until late in the afternoon, when Som erset com pleted their innings for 163, leaving Ham pshire only 13 runs to w in, a num ber w hich, was quickly obtained. The first elevens m et at East A cton and each scored 77, whilst at Brondesbury the second eleven of the hom e side were dism issed for 158 and Shepherd’s Bush replied w ith 158 for tw o w ickets.
