Com m ittee in allocating a County Cham pionship m atch to H orsham proved a great success on the first day, the attendance reaching about five thousand. The start w as delayed for 25 m inutes, as it was un certain w hether Fry w ould appear to assist Sussex. The hom e side m ade a good start, the first w icket not falling until 81. A t the end o f half-an-hour the score was 35, of w hich Vine had m ade 4, all singles. W hen 50 w ent up in 55 m inutes R elf had scored 40, and w hen the first w icket fell he had m ade 54 of the 81 runs ; he played attractive cricket and hit eight 4’s. W ith Vine and K illick together 75 were pu t 011 for the second w icket in an hour and a-quarter, Vine then being caught at the w icket for a clianceless and very steady innings of 53 out of 156 in 155 m inutes ; at one period he m ade only a single in half-an-hour. K illick w as third out, at 170, for a useful 4S, but the Jam , Sm ith, and Sim m s m ade only a dozen betw een them , the sixth w icket falling at 204. A . E. Relf, w ho played the best cricket of the day, and Leach added 61 in 45 m inutes, and the total reached 298. R elf m ade his 69 in 90 m inutes w ithout a m istake and hit nine 4’s before being caught at slip. Benham bow led splendidly and took seven w ickets for 60 runs. Essex m ade 2 runs w ithout loss at the end of the day. No play was possible on Tuesday ow ing to rain. W ednesday also was a blank day, the m atch being consequently abandoned. N o tts w o n b y six w ick ets. Although showery w eather was experienced on the first day, 301 runs were m ade for the loss o f thirteen wickets. Bailey, late o f Surrey and Somerset, and Ringrose, form erly of the Yorkshire team , played for Scotland. Bowie, who hit seven 4’s in m aking 66 , gave three chances, whilst Chalmers, w ho scored 40 not out, was missed by Jones when 12 . The soundest batting o f the innings, w hich am ounted to 215, was K eigw in’s. N otts lost Turner and Gunn for 27, but Payton helped to add 43, after which the brothers Irem onger rem ained together until the close, when the score was 86 for three wickets. On Tuesday J. Irem onger added 16 to his overnight total, but the beat batting on the side was shown by Branston, who cut and drove finely in m aking 41. Scotland, with a lead o f 21, were disposed o f for 133 in their second innings, the only feature o f their display being the batting o f D ickson, who hit six 4’s during the 150 m inutes he was in. N otts were set only 155 to win, and by the end of the day had m ade 49 for the loss of Turner’s w icket. On the 6 th inst. he scored 147 v. Yardley, 011 the 8 th 75 v. H inckley, and on the 13th 130 v. H arborne. J . A. Clinkard (107) and J. R . F. Turner (48 not out) pu t on 81 for the seventh w icket of O xford City v. W orcester College, O xford, in 22 m inutes 011 June 11th. The last 125 runs scored by O xford City were m ade in 35 m inutes. A RM Y v. NAVY. Played at Lord’s on June 15, 16 and 17. Drawn. There was very bright cricket on M onday at L ord’s, the Arm y scoring 383 in four hours and a half, and the Navy m aking 40 fo r tw o w ickets in the final three-quarters o f an hour. Turner m ade his 128 in three hours w ithout a chance and hit six 4’s, and Poore m ade his 62 in 65 m inutes. O n the second day rain prevented anv play before lunch. The N avy com pleted their innings for 249, W ilson and Evans showing the best form . O f the 55 m ade for three w ickets by the A rm y in their second innings before stumps w ere drawn, Brooke claim ed as many as 41 o f the 50 m ade from the bat.
