Cricket 1908

210 CR ICK ET : A W EEKLY RECORD OF TH E GAME. J u n e 18 , 1908 . “ M y highest inning's was 191 against Som erset, at T aunton, for which I batted a trifle over six hours, but the m atch from which I derived m ost pleasure w as that w ith Surrey at the O val. T h ey had won the Cham pionship the year before, and so w e w ere very keen to beat them if possible. T here w as little between us on the first innings, but when w e set them over 400 to w in we thought w e should pull through fairly com fortably. But B rockw ell m ade over 100 and W . W . Read and Lohm ann scored heavily, so that w e w on by less than 50 runs. I m ade 57 and 102, being not out in the first innings, and w as m uch amused to note the unanim ity w ith which the papers said 1 w as only 17 years o f a ge. As a m atter o f fact I had com pleted m y twenty- first year, but, accordin g to som e journalists, I rem ained only 17 for several seasons a fterw ards.” “ D id you m aintain your form o f 1 896?” “ I did not. M y eyes began to trouble m e, and, as they handicapped m e severely and occasioned loss o f form , I w as not sur prised that the C omm ittee should ask me to stand down. T here was nothing to do but to take to glasses, which 1 did with m ost satisfactory results. I w as taken into the side again in G eorge B ea n ’s benefit m atch, against Surrey in July, 1898, and have not missed a gam e since. T h u rsd a y’s m atch at Leicester w ill be m y 272nd con secutive appearance for S u ssex.” T his record, for record it is, must be considered altogether rem arkable when it is rem em bered how frequently one reads of a player not appearing in a m atch ow in g to an accident, a m issed train, ill-health, tem porary lack of form or som e other o f the innum erable little circum stances which occasionally crops up to disturb arrange ments. “ Y ou must have seen plenty o f fine run- g ettin g during your connection w ith the Sussex te a m ?” “ A bsolutely the best innings I ever saw was R an jitsin h ji’s 202 against M iddlesex at H ove eight years a go. M iddlesex had m ade 401 in their first innings and very early in the second afternoon there was a heavy thunder-storm , which prevented further play until the third day, when the w icket w as all in favour o f the bowlers. H ad it not been for R anjitsinhji w e should have cut a sorry figure. H e m ade 202 in three hours in m arvellous fashion, and only V in e o f those who went in after him reached double figures, and he didn’t m ake twenty. R anjitsinhji got about 150 o f his runs by boundary hits, and I think you will find that he and M r. C . L . A. Sm ith put on about 80 together, although the latter made only tw o. In another match he scored tw o separate hundreds in a day against Y ork shire. T he highest innings I have seen him play w as his 285 not out at Taunton about seven years a g o . Som erset, when they had headed our score by over 300, de clared their innings with seven wickets dow n, but Sussex replied with 466 for one w ick et, and the m atch w as easily d ra w n .” “ And have you not seen M r. Jessop in form m ore than o n c e ? ” “ H e seems to have a partiality for our b ow lin g. At B ristol last year he scored 240 against us at about the rate o f eighty an hour, and in the return g o t 119 in an hour and a-quarter. In the latter match he m ade 54 runs off the reel, and once when w e were playing at B ristol he made 66 in less than half-an-hour without M r. R ice, w ho w as in w ith him , scoring at all. H e has also m ade 179 and 286 against us at B righton. W hen he gets set it is diffi cult to know w hat to bow l to him , for he can adapt him self adm irably to circum stances, and he thinks nothing o f pulling a ball alm ost w ide on the off round to, or over, the boundary at square-leg. And som e o f the grounds seem very small when he has ‘ taken ro o t.’ I have often w on dered whether it would be o f any use to toss him very high-pitched lobs, to drop on the bails, as I have heard Dr. E. M . Grace did once at the O val to Jupp. T h e novelty o f the thing m ight cause him to get caught for a small score ; but on the other hand it m ight not. I wish som eone would try the experim ent. ” “ D id you not spend one winter in South A frica ? ” “ Y es, at C ape T ow n , but there is little to record of interest in connection with the visit. O n Saturday afternoons I played for the Green Point Club and during the rest of the w eek coached the boys at the South A frican C ollege. All the wickets were of m atting, off which the ball rises at a great pace. There w ere m any g ood players in W estern Province and Cape T ow n , but from what I heard they were hardly up to the standard o f those in the T ra n sva a l.” “ D id not som e m embers of your fam ily play for Sussex about forty years a g o ? ” “ M y uncle H enry played for about ten years, and once m ade 78 against Surrey. H e w as a left-handed bat, but bow led r ig h t ; he could also keep w icket, and, in fact, did so for the County. H is great feat w as to score 182 not out for a team o f veterans and colts against the Sussex Eleven at B righton. Another uncle, Anthony K illick, was a good cricketer; but played only once for the C ou n ty.” W AN D ERERS v.
