W arw ick shire gave a very weak display and in 190 m inutes were dism issed for 119. Arnold took six w ickets for 56 runs bu t the poor batting flattered h’m . Fish w ick was caught at short-leg off the first ball of the innings and Baker caught at the w icket at 11. H alf the side w ere ou t for 42 and only Glover show ed any confidence. W orcestershire played a very different gam e, Foster and B ow ley exceeding the hom e total w ithout b ein g separated. They scored 100 in an hour bu t at 135 w ere both dism issed ; neither gave a chance and Foster h it nine 4’s and Bow ley five. Pearson and Arnold added 42 w ithout being parted, and at the end of the day the score was 177 for tw o w ickets. The bow lers carried all before them on Tuesday m orning, W orcestershire’s last eight w ickets going dow n for 60 against F ield and H aigreave, W orcestershire’s h a d thus being restricted to 118. A gainst Cuffe and bim p^on-H ayw ard W arw ickshire lost half their w ick ts fo r 80 in the second innings, but L illey, playing a great gam e, scored 78, and, w ith F ishw .ck, put on 102 fo r the seventh w icket in 75 m inutes. L illey hit ten fours, driving w ith great pow er, and offered no chance until he had m ade 70. W orcestershire, set 98 to w in, had lost Bow ley aud Pearson for 14 b y the tim e play ceased. D erbyshire took four hours to make 249 on a good w icket on M onday, the scoring at tim es being very sedate. A fie r three w ickets had fallen for 60, Cadm an and M orton put on 52 in 50 m inutes, but eight m en w ere out for 155. H um phiies, however, played well, and with Rickm an added 45 fo r the niuth wicket, and w ith Bestw ick 49 fo r the last. H am pshire lost M ead w ithout a run, and Bowell at 9, whilst by the tim e the score had reached 66 both W hite and Llew ellyn had been dismissed. Iu the rem aining 20 m inutes H ill and Sprot put on 57, but the form er was missed w hen 24 and the latter when 20. A t the end o f the day the total was 123 fo r four w ickets. Sprot was out w hen the fifth w icket had added 60 in 25 m inutes, but H ill continued to hit and m ade sixteen 4’s in scoring 78 in 65 m inutes ; he offered tw o chances, and m ade 16 in an over from Warren. Stone and Rem nant scored usefully, but the innings closed for 235, leaving the visitors w ith a lead of 14. A t lunch the latter had three w ickets dow n for 14. The sixth fell at 94, but then R ickm an and Hum phries again played well, putting on 62 in an hour for the seventh w icket. The last three m en added only 6 , how ever, and Hants were left 177 to w in. Badcock, in the tw o innings of the hom e side, took eleven w ickets for 126 runs. Hants lost Bow ell, Mead, and Llew ellyn in an hour for 27, but H ill and W hite added 39 w ithout further loss, and w hen stum ps w ere draw n 101 were still required w ith seven w ickets in hand. Y esterday, w ith 9 added, W hite w as caught at slip, but when three figures w ent up w ithout further loss a w in for H am pshire appeared probable. W arren and Cadm an, how ever, bow led finely, and D erbyshire pulled through by 36 runs. It w as a w ell-con tested m atch and interesting from start to finish. A ftfr a poor start on a good w icket the visitors scored well, and by the end of the first d iy had made 395 for six wickets. They lost K night at 31, W h ite head at 39, and W ood at 43, but Coe and K ing then made a great stand, putting on 249 for the fourth w icket in three hours and a-quarter. K in g was then caught at m id-on fo r 142 m ade out o f 253 in 210 m inutes—an innings which contained nineteen 4*8, and was disfigured by no real chance. Coe was fif h out, at 338; he hit eighteen 4’s in scoring 127 out o f 211 in 225 m inutes without a m istake, and showed strong defence and fine hitting pow er. Crawford m ade 48 in 50 m inutes and, w hen stumps were diaw n, the total was 395 for six wickets. Over 7,000 persons watched the plav. On Tuesday Jayes took his score to 44, w hich took an hour to com pile, and contained eight 4’s, and the innings, after lasting six hours, closed for 431. Fast took five wickets for 83 runs in the large total. Northants lost P ool in the slips at 17 and K ingston at square-leg at 33, whilst Haw tin, having batted 70 m inutes fo r 16, was bowled. East did little and, Thom pson only just reaching double figures, the fifth w icket fell at 70, Cox, Crosse, W ells and H ardy subsequently m aking useful scores, the total realised 181. F ollow ing-ou. 250 behind, Northants m ade a better start, P ool aud K ingston scoring 93 for the first w icket in 65 minutes. The form er, w ho m ade 63 o f the num ber, hit five 4’s, but his good lead was not follow ed, three wickets being dow n b y the end o f the day fo r 109.
