Cricket 1908

J u n e 4 , 1908 . CRICKET a w e e k l y r e co r d of t h e g a m e . G L O U C E S T E R S H IR E v. N O T T S . Played at Bristol on May 28, 29 and 30. Notts won by six wickets. G loucestershire substituted Ford for Dean in this m atch, and the change proved very success ful. Board and Langdon scored 41 for the first wicket before the latter was unfortunate enough to play-on. Godsell and W instone were quickly run out and, w ith Jessop caught at the w icket off the second ball he received, four w ickets were down for 54. Huggins helped Board to add 27 for the fifth w icket. Off the first ball sent dow n after lunch, the latter was out to a fine catch low down at point, having, by very good cricket, scored 49 out pf 96 in a couple of hours w ithout a m istake; he hit three 4’s and was seventh out. Jellie and F ord m ade useful scores, the form er scoring 19 in 55 m inutes and the latter 24 in a- quarter of an hour. The w hole side were dis missed in 170 m inutes for 143, a poor total con sidering that the w icket was true. Wass took six w ickets for 79 runs. N otts had a splendid start given them b y George Gunn and Irem onger, who sent 50 up in an hour and the hundred in 110 m inutes w ithout being separated. W hen the partnership had lasted tw o hours and realised 106 runs, how ever, Gunn was sm artly stum ped for a faultless innings of 64. Irem onger was caught at cover 3 runs later, his 40 runs including 22 singles. Hardstaff and John Gunn then played out tim e, taking the total to 141 without further loss. On F riday both m en were sent back at 160. Alletson m ade a few good hits and Payton put on 36 for the last w icket in 20 m inutes, the innings closing for 241 after a larger total had appeared probable. On the second m orning F ord and Huggins each took four w ickets for 10 runs, and Board at the w icket was very smart indeed. In a m inority of 98, G loucestershire made a deplor able start w hen they went in the second tim e, Board being bowled at 1, Langdon caught at 8, and G odsell bow led at 15, all three wicket3 fall ing to Wass at a cost of only 5 runs. Jessop then w ent in and practically m onopolised the scoring. H e took 20 m inutes to make his first 20 runs, but afterwards hit so freely that he com pleted his 50 out of 85 in 40 m inutes, scor ing 6, 4, 2, and 6 off consecutive balls from H allam . H e afterwards m ade 56 of the next 60 in 40 m inutes, scoring, therefore, his 106 out of 145 in eighty m inutes. H e gave no chance, scored off 44 of 80 balls he received, and hit four 6’s, a 5, and seven 4’s. Ford hit tw o consecutive balls from John Gunn on to the Pavilion roof, whilst Jellie, w ho was last out, batted very patiently for 27. N otts were left 119 to w in, and, by the end of the day, had m ade 42 for the loss of the wickets o f George Gunn and Hallam. On Satur day Hardstaff was bow led at 81, and, after John Gunn had been stum ped at 114, the balance of the runs was hit off, N otts winning by six wickets. Irem onger scored 51 not out, and had a good deal to do with the success of his side. Score and analysis:— G lou cestersh ire . F irst innings. Second innings.
