D<»11 and Eddis m ade a g ood stand, pu tting on 74 together for the fifth w ick e t; the latter, how ever, was decidedly fortunate, seeing that he was tw ice missed off Lucas. D oll show ed strong defence and batted an hour and a-half for 32. The ninth w icket fell at 194, but Hearne hit so successfully that, in partnership w ith Druce, as m any as 39 w ere put on for the last wicket. Luca 3 , a fast right-handed bow ler, took five w ickets for 74 runs in the innings of 233, w hich lasted four hours. The M.C.C. opened their second innings w ith a lend of 94, and D oll and W arner took the total to 29 before the latter was dism issed by a fine throw -out by Young. A fter his dism issal, a collapse occurred, and the total was only 123 when the sixth w icket fell. D ruce, who hit five 4’s in his useful 49, added 48 for the seventh w icket w ith Eddis and 34 for the eighth with Ilendren, and, when play ceased, the M .C.C., w ith one w icket in hand, were 328 runs on. On the third m orning 14 runs were added before the innings closed, every player reaching double figures, and the U niversity being set 343 to win. Young and M ann m ade 37 for the first w icket in half an-hour, but succeeding batsm en did not do so well, and at lunch half the side were out for 72.
