M ay 14, 1908. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 135 wickets for 26 runs. W right’s side, upon going in the second time, lost three wickets for 20, a id, although Gay and Pawson added 38 for the fourth wicket, and Burr made 32 not out, the total amounted to 122 only. Burrows, last year’s captain of Charterhouse, got a lot of work on the ball and took six wickets for 40 with his slow right-hand bowling. H urst’s side were set 316 to win, and, after losing their first six wickets for 19, were disposed of in an hour for 44, Leslie dismissing six men for 18 runs. Score and analysis:— M r . E L. Going in when two wickets had fallen for four runs, he scored 86 in two hours and five minutes, the next highest innings in the total of 189 being 19 by Doll. He played steadily whilst making l is first 40 111ns, but afterwards hit out more freely and seemed set for his hun dred when he was out to a very fine running citch by Ireland at deep square-leg: he hit nine 4’s.Martin, a slow right-hand howler, was the most successful in the attack, his four wickets costing a trifle over 10 runs each. In the last 80 minutes of the day W right’s side scored 54 for five wickets. There was rain on the following morning, when, after three overs had been delivered, no play was possible until 2 o ’clock. Mann and Tufnell were together an hour and a half, during which they added 86 for the sixth wicket. The latter showed strong defence, took 85 irirutes to score 50, and hit only four 4’s. Mann, who hit five 4’s, batted thiee hours and a quarter for 76 not out, and, if his cricket was slow, it must not be forgotten that there were 13 men in the field, and that the wicket was dead. Young’s side, six runs behind, lost a couple of wickets for 47 by the end of the day, Reid, who batted an hour, carrying out his bat for 10. On the Saturday the innings closed for 163, Pigg, Martin, and Mann all bowl ing with effect, leaving W right’s side 158 to win. Doubtless the runs would have been made had time admitted, for, when stumps were drawn, only 26 runs were required with four wickets in hand. Score an1 analysis:— Mr. R. A. Y oung ’ s X III.
