Last week’s meeting of the Surrey County C.C. at the Oval was more than usually interesting, owing to Mr. Latham’s important proposal concerning the management of the Club. He sug gested that four members of the Com mittee retire at each annual meeting and not be eligible for re-election until the next year : the rule as it at present standi permits the eight retiring members to be at once eligible for re-election. The great objection to the system in force is that opposition to the immediate return to office of a retiring committeeman would tend to introduce the personal element to an undesirable extent. The result has been that members of the Club have hitherto refrained from- resisting- the-re- election of those whose term of office has* automatically expired. The original rules of the Club enacted that the Com mittee should be elected annually—an ar» rangement which doubtless proved ade quate to meet all the requirements of those early and leisurely days, but which would not answer at all in these times, when the business of the Club is so heavy that the possibility of the constitution of the entire Committee being changed at one time could not be entertained for a moment. Mr. Latham’s motion has much to ‘recommend it, and by it, those re tiring committeemen who had done good work would be practically certain to be "'returned to office. A vote will shortly be taken of the whole membership of the Club, and the result will be anxiously awaited.
