Difford, Secretary to the S.A.C.A., opened their tour through Natal and the eastern portion of Cape Colony by meeting Maritzburg on March 20th and 21st. In the absence of such men as Campbell, Stanton, Brunton, and F. E. Smith, the tourists were not so strong as they origin ally intended to be, but they were neverthe less a good side. is t M atch . —v. MARITZBURG. Played at Maritzburg on March 20 and 21. Drawn. The Transvaal team, winning the toss, batted 220 minutes for 267 runs. Zulch and Lindsay made 102 for the first wicket and Schwarz, hit ting seven 4’s, scored 62 out of 112 in an hour and a-half. Apart from Forder, who made his 56 out of 113 in 123 minutes and hit eight 4’s, only Arbuthnot reached double figures for Maritzburg, the innings realising only 130. Schwarz, upon the Transvaal team going in the second time, again proved the greatest run- getter, scoring 48 out of 90 in an hour. With eight wickets down for 145 the innings was de clared closed, leaving Maritzburg with 2f-3 to win. For some time it appeared likely that the visitors would win, but, owing to a plucky stand of 92 for the sixth wicket by Arbuthnot and Pearse, Maritzburg managed to save the game. Pearse hit five 4’s in making 63 out of 135 in two hours, but offered four chances. It will be seen that Schwarz failed to take a wicket in either innings. The Colts were chosen from the D-urban players who had never represented Natal. Diffoid, whilst fielding, put his knee out and had to be carried off the field to a doctor, who pulled it back.
