This was the first match ever played between Victoria and Tasmania. The match arose from a challenge sent by Victoria in February, 1850, to the (then) newly-formed Club at Launceston. Tasmania accepted the challenge and the match should have been played in March, 1850, and was only then prevented by the gentleman deputed to forward the accept ance forgetting to post his letter in time for the steamer. The Victoria challenge was repeated in the spring of 1851, and the match here chronicled was the result. The Tasmanian X I. consisted of five players of Launceston, three from Hobart Town, and one each from the Perth, Longford, and Westbury Clubs. The match commenced at half-past ten. Tasmania won the toss and put Vic toria in. In their second innings Tasmania lost six wickets for 15 runs, but the light was very bad. “ We were especially delighted that the spectators refrained from clapping or shouting on the fall of a rival wicket, or a rare stroke from our own.” “ We think the history of cricket can furnish no parallel to the spirit displayed by the Victorians in leaving their homes and professions, and undertaking a sea voyage of some hundreds of miles (no light matter), for the purpose of playing a friendly game, and also, as we believe, promoting an increased love for cricket in this island.” The bowling analyses are slighly in correct, the extras having been added to the runs obtained from the various bowlers. A collection was made by the Victorian Eleven, prior to their departure, for the benefit of the public institutions of Launceston. The money received was divided thus :—Benevolent Society, ±‘10 ; St. John’s Hospital, ±10 ; Mechanics’ Institute, £5 ; Building Fund for the New Grammar School, £5. Total, ±30.
