Cricket 1907
D ec . 19, 1907. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 469 McAlistor was seen to advantage in each innings, and Hartigan, who did well in the Queensland match, and Redgrave made good scores. Hutchings celebrated his twenty-fifth birthday by playing a sound and vigorous innings, in the course of which he punished Cotter for 20 in an over. Braund bowled with much effect in the first innings of the home side. Score:— A n A u s tr a lia n XI. R. Hartigan, 16 and not out 55 ; C. G. Macartney, 42; F. A. Tarrant, 2 and 3 ; P. Played at Sydney on December 13, 14, 16, 17, 18, and 19. Australia won by two wickets. In the absence of A. O. Jones, who was unfortu nately in hospital at Brisbane suffering from congestion of the right lung, Geo. Gunn was included in the England side and with the happiest result. His scores of 119 and 74, despite the fine up-hill play by the homo side in their second innings, were clearly the feature of the match. The lack of Jones’ leadership must certainly have handi capped the side, whilst it is very doubtful whether the preference given to Young over Humphries was justified. Rain interfered greatly with the match on the fourth day and prevented any play taking place yesterday. On the last day, although the wicket had been .affected by rain, the Australians managed to pull off the match, playing a splendid up-hill game. Score :— E n g la n d .— F. L. Fane, 2 and 33; R. A. M a jo r W. B l a c k e r , J.P. Major William Blacker, who was born in Dublin on September 29th, 1853, died in November in his fifty-fifth year. He was in the Harrow Eleven in 1871 and 1872, in the latter year playing a fine first innings of 45— the highest in the match—against Eton, jit Lord’s. Scoresand Biographies (xii., 167) said of him :—“ Is a fine hitter, fields generally at long-stop or long-field, and has distinguished himself in various matches in which he has participated.” He was for four years, 1873-76, a member of the Cambridge Eleven, playing each year against Oxford at Lord’s. His scores in the ’ Varsity match were very disappointing, being only 24 and 26, 0 and 0, 19and 1, 0 and not out 0 : Cambridge won by nine wickets in 1876, but each of the other three matches resulted in favour of Oxford. His best performance in a match of note was to score 86 for Gentlemen of the South against Players of the South at the val in 1876. CRICKET IN JAPAN. ENGLISH PUBLIC SCHOOLS v. THE REST. Played at Yokohama on September 7. The Public Schools won by 39 runs. The feature of this twelve-a-side match was the batting of Mollison, who scored his 72 runs out of 91 obtained whilst in. The Rest, who batted one short, were beaten by 39 runs. Score and analysis;— E nglish P ublic S chools . O. Strome (Hurstpier point), run out ... 3 B. C. Foster (Mill Hill), c E. W. The previous match between these two sides, played on June 29th, resulted in favour of Yokohama by 53 runs (182 to 129), but on the present occasion Tokyo proved successful by four wickets. The fall of the last Tokyo m icket was thus described by the Japan Advertiser : “ Foster went on to bowl again, and Smith hit a hot liner straight at him. Foster stopped it, dropped it, recovered it before it fell to the ground only to lose it again, fell down, but at the same time finally and triumphantly clutched the sphere between his palms.” Score and analysis :— Y okohama .
