Cricket 1907

448 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. O ct . 31, 1907 Lord’s. The latter post he retained until his death, always giving much satisfaction as an all-round cricketer and, in later years, as an umpire. In order to mark their appreciation of his services, the M.C.C. set apart the pio- ceeds of last year’s Whit Monday match at Lord’s between Middlesex and Somerset as a benefit for him. Although between ten and twelve thousand spectators were present on the first day, the match hardly proved so attractive as was hoped and anticipated. As an umpire, Titchmarsh’s reputation stood deservedly high. He officiated in many great games, including the Test matches with Australia at Nottingham in 1899, at Lord’s in 1902, and at Leeds two years ago, and matches between the Gentlemen and Players in 18;)4, 1902, 1903, and 1904. In 1903, when, as a result of the discussion concerning the proposal to increase the size of the wicket, the M.C.C. instructed the umpires to make frequent use of the gauge in order to tsst the legality of the width of bats, Titch- marsh discovered more than one player about to perform with a bat exceeding the statutory limit. In the match at the Oval between London County and Surrey, Board had to return to the pavilion to change his bit, and E. H. D. Sewell was sent back twice : the two players afterwards proved the highest scorers in the innings. A few weeks later, in the Susa x v. Worcestershire match at Brighton, H. K. Foster’s bat, on being tested by Titchmarsh, failed to piss the gauge and was accordingly changed. In minor cricket the deceased, of whom a portrait and biographical notice appeared in Cricket of May 31st, 1906, accomplished many noteworthv feats. Playing for St. Albans against XVIII. of the Star C.C., in 1880, he helped to make 250 for the opening partnership at a time when scoring was not nearly so heavy as it has been of recent years. St. Albans scored 276 for one wicket:— At St. Alban’s, October 4th, 1880. W. T. Westell, b Webdale .................. 119 V. A. Titchmarsh, not o u t ...................137 T. M r . W. H am er . Mr. Wilberforce Hamer, a member of the Committee of the Lancashire County C.C., died at Blackburn on the 12th inst. in his forty-fifth year. He was for many years a playing member, and sometime captain, of the East Lancashire U.C., and played football for the Blackburn Rovers in their early days with Mr. A. N. Hornby and other well- known amateurs. He took an active interest in all manly sports. T he R ev . E. B. C. S p u r w a y . The Rev.
