O ct . 31, 1907. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 445 THE CRICKET TOURNAMENT IN BRITISH GUIANA. The eighth Tournament in which Barbados Trinidad, and British Guiana have taken part was held at Georgetown in mid-September. In the first of the two matches Trinidad bo.it the last-named by nine wickets, and in the second, owing in no small measure to the weather breaking up at the end of the first day, defeated the holders of the Cup— Barbados—by ten wickets. H.E. the Gov ernor was an interested spectator of the matches. The scores follow :— BRITISH GUIANA v. TRINIDAD, Played at Georgetown on September 12, 13, and 14. Trinidad won by nine wickets. The home side made a very creditable start, thanks to Abraham and B. H. Bayley, who put on 69 together for the fourth wicket. The last five on the side, how ever, added but 13, and the innings closed for 173. The feature of Trinidad’s cricket was the batting of Harragin, who hit twenty 4’s whilst scoring 123 out of 179 in two hours and a-half. His display was by no means faultless, but as to its value there could not be two opinions. In partnership with Dr. Turpin he put on 111 for the eighth wicket. British Guiana in their second innings gave a disappointing display, the weakness of the tail being again very apparent. Trinidad were set only 20 runs to win and, obtain ing that number for the loss of Smith, proved suc cessful by nine wickets. Constantine, it will be seen, took seven wickets for 37 runs. Played at Georgetown on September 16, 17, and 18. Trinidad won by ten wickets. By defeating British Guiana, Trinidad qualified to meet Barbados, the holders of the Cup. They made an excellent start, for, although Smith and Betan court were disposed of quickly, Learmond and Hector put on 95 for the third wicket, the former making 78 out of 145in one hundred and ten minutes by faultless cricket. Constantine and Arrowsmith also scored well, and a total of 290 was reached. Harragin made his runs by means of nine 4’s and a single, and claimed 37 of the 52 added in twenty minutes for the fifth wicket with Constantine. By the end of the day Barbados had scored 15 without loss. During the night there was heavy rain, the consequence being that on the following morning Hector and Bennett proved so irresistible that they got all the ten wickets down for 35, the innings closing for 50. Browne, who made eight of the runs, batted half an hour ere scoring. When Barbados followed on the wicket had recovered to a great extent, and the innings defeat was avoided. Gibbs and Tarilton put on 73 together, but Trinidad experienced no difficulty in securing the Cup. Score and analysis— T r in id a d . 78 9 G. C. Learmond, b Mason ................. C. R.
