Cricket 1907
S e p t. 12, 1907 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 411 was Mr. Robert Sessions, of the New Inn, Farnborough (now rather an old inn), who always umpired for Sir John, and in the course of the game would make comments, naturally favourable, on the underhand bowling of the latter. It was he who, when expostulated with for not calling an obvious wide bowled by one of the next generation, replied in a stage whisper, “ Hush! hush! the young gen’leman don’t like i t ! ” Sir John was the eminent mathematician and astronomer. T h e Lubbock family, as is generally known, is the one which gives its name to Rnbarts, Lubbock & Co.’s Bink. Tn the History o f Kent County Cricket there is an amusing account, telling how some -years ago a run on the Bank cost £ 8 0 000 :— “ It was started in so extraordinary a manner that it may prove of interest to briefly narrate the circumstances. An old lady slipped outside the main entrance to the Bank, and fractured one of her legs. Very quickly a large crowd gathered around her, and people passing could not help seeing the excited group. “ Hullo ! A run on Lub bock’s ! ” some one exclaimed, and, others taking up the remark, as people are apt to do, the report ran with incredible speed through the city. Anxious depositors rushed to the Bank to withdraw ere it was too late, and the run soon became so serious that securities had to be realised at a moment’s notice, and, altogether, the incident cost Lubbock's the large sum mentioned above.” “ Nowadays,” adds the writer, “ old ladies are courteously invited not to slip down before the front doors of Banks in busy city thoroughfares.” In the five matches wherein he has played against the South Africans, Hayward has had eight completed H i r ing;), and on seven occasions has been dismissed by Sherwell :— For England, at Lord’s— st Sherwell, b Vogler ... ................ 21 For Surrey, at the Oval— j c Sherwell, b S. Up to Monday morning Rhodes had taken 173 wickets aud scortd 974 run?. When he went ia to bat that afternoon against the South Africans, at Scar borough, he batted very steadily until he had made his aggregate of runs a four-figure one, and then, hitting freely, scored over fifty more before being run out in attempting an impossibility. This is the fifth year in succession iu which he has brought off the double event of a thousand runs and a hundred wickets, his aggregates iu the four previous seasons being:—- 1003 1904 Runs. 11:57 1537 Wkts. . 103 I . 131 1905 1900 Runs. 1581 1721 Wkts. ,. 182 ,. 128 W.G.” and Hirst are the only other cricketers who have performed the feat five years running.
