Cricket 1907

37 0 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. A u g . 29, 1907. Gentlemen v. Players at Lord’s. As it happened, he failed in the b ig match, but subsequent events proved that the compliment was fully deserved. Quite individual in style, he recalled none of his predecessors. Extreme brilliancy was the keynote of his cricket, his driving power on both sides of the wicket being tremendous. However, he was far more than a mere driving player, scoring all round with the utmost facility. W ithout in any respect resembling the Australian batsman, he was almost an English Trumper in the freedom with which he treated even the best of bowlers. Like most modern batBmen of high-class, he depends for purposes of defence mainly on strong back play.” This year, with the wickets frequently against run-getting, he has not scored so heavily as in 1906, but at times he has shown all his old brilliancy. He was very unfortunate in being placed hors de combat by a severe blow on the hand in the match with the South Africans at Gatford, as the accident kept him out of the cricket field for some weeks. Fortu nately, when he returned to the game it was found that his powers were unim paired. In the first week of August he made two separate hundreds, 109 and not out 109, on the Worcester ground when the conditions were by no means in favour of run-getting, and this success he supplemented iu the Canterbury Week by scoring 32 against Sussex, and 108 against Lancashire. The fact that he has accepted the invitation extended to him by the M.C.C. to visit Australia duiing the winter has been welcomed everywhere, for it is felt that the wickets upon which he will be called upon to play will prove entirely to his liking. There is certainly no other cricketer on the side whose doings will be so keenly anticipated, and news of whose success will be so gladly received. If he can but reproduce in Australia the form which last season stamped him as the most brilliant batsman in the country, specta tors in the Colonies will be fortunate indeed. Mr. Hutchings was born at South- borough on December 7th, 1882, and is one of three brothers who have been ia both the Tonbridge and Kent Elevens. His father was a fine local cricketer in his day, and made many a hundred in local matches, whilst an uncle, the Rev. E. L . Colebrooke, was in the Oxford Eleven of 1880, and another, Mr. H . L. Co’ ebrooke, captain of Tonbridge in the eigh ties. L. & W . B ank (3). LONDON AND WESTMINSTER BANK (3) v. FOREST HILL (3).—Played at Forest Hill 011 August 24. F orest H ill (3). J. H.
