30 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. F eb. 28, 1907. Wales had made 133 for the loss of only one wicket. The visitors lost Gehrs at 7 and Pellew at 22, and at lunch-time half the side were out for 55. Dolling and Jennings afterwards took the score to 86 for the sixth wicket, and H ill played a useful innings. New South Wales found no difficulty in run- getting. The first wicket fell at 64, but Diamond and Hopkins then added 193 together for the second partnership in one hundred and forty minutes, the former scor ing 138 in two hundred and ten minutes, and the latter 108 in one hundred and forty. Diamond hit a 6 and thirteen 4’s, and Hopkins fifteen 4’8. Blaxland, who was making his debut in a Sheffield Shield match, played a steady and chanceless innings, and, with Noble, put on 169 for the fifth wicket. The last-named, who might have been stumped off the first ball he received, was in two hours and a-quarter for 99, and was bowled by a fast ball from H ill whilst trying to glance to leg. At the end of the day the total was 532 for eight wickets, and this was increased the next morning to 573. South Australia had a hopeless task when they went in the second time, being 416 in arrears, and a victory for the home side was recognised as inevitable. Gehrs and Mayne made 63 together for the first wicket, but Jennings again proved the highest run-getter on the side. Some useful scores were made, but nobody succeeded in reaching the half- century, and New South Wales were eventually left victorious by an innings and 168 runs. From start to finish the visitors thoroughly outplayed their opponents, and eventually gained the easiest of victories by an innings and 234 runs. De Trafford and Johnson made 70 for the first wicket in 25 minutes, Harrison hitting thirteen 4’s, played a fault less innings of 103; whilst Page hit so successfully that his 68 contained an 8 (including overthrows), a 6, and ten 4’s. The innings was declared closed at 449 for nine, and the home side failed rather badly against Simpson-Hayward in the first innings and Douglas in the second. Cave hit well for his 55 and showed good defence, but no one else exhibited any mastery over the bowling. The home side, who played fifteen men, had only thirteen in the field. Played at Wellington on December 25, 26 and 27. Drawn. #The home side did well in this match to dispose of the M.C.C. for 204, and for this they were mainly indebted to Monaghan, who took seven wickets for 50 runs. The feature of the innings was furnished by Burns, who hit a 6 and seven 4’s in his 51. May hit lustily at the finish, his 29 containing half-a- dozen boundaries and a three. Everything in the Wellington innings was dwarfed by the display of YVilliams, who played a splendid innings of 100. During the second day a series of accidents befel the visitors. Whilst in the field they lost Douglas, who strained his side and had to retire; then Wynyard broke the tendon of his right leg, and had to be carried off the field, whilst a little later Torrens strained his left leg, and was obliged to retire also. In their second inn ings the M.C.C. gave a better display, scoring 259, although lacking the services of W yn yard. Burns hit ten 4’s in his 59, and Page nine in his 61; the latter, in partnership with Simpson-Hayward, put on 95. Upham did well to take six wickets for 78 in an inn ings of 259. W ellington, set 253 to win, lost five men for 63, but Tucker and Mahony then added So without being separated, and so caused the game to be drawn. Score and analysis :— M.C.C. First innings. P. R.
