DERBYSHIRE v. NOTTINGHAM SHIRE. Played at Chesterfield on Aug. 15,16, and 17. Notts won by nine wickets. Owing to the ground being very soft after heavy rain, play was not possible on the opening day until three o’clock. Derbjrshire then went in, and, after losing four wickets for 21 runs, were obliged by further heavy rain to abandon play until Friday. On the second day twenty-two wickets fell for 236 runs. Wass, by taking six wickets for 31 runs, brought the Derbyshire innings to a close for 62, and by lunch the visitors h id lost six wickets for 51. After the interval Hardstaff and Alletson put on 71 in fifty-five minutes, and, when the innings closed for 153, the former carried out his bat for a capital effort of 60, which contained a dozen 4’s. Before stumps were drawn Derbyshire lost six wickets for ■14 runs against Wass and Hallam, and, despite a fine innings by Wright, were beaten by nine wickets early on the third morning. Played at Northampton on August 15, 16, and 17. Leicestershire won by 115 runs. Play was terribly slow on the first day, only 185 runs being made for thirteen wickets in five hours on a pitch which" did not assist the bowlers. For Leicestershire, Whitehead scored 31 but offered three chances, whilst King, who was second highest scorer, batted an hour and 20 minutes for 24. East, owing to an attack of lumbago, was obliged to retire from the game after bowling four overs. Northants., in response to the total of 115, lost three wickets for 49, after which Pool and Thompson added 21 together without being separated for the fourth wicket by the end of the day. On Friday, Pool and Kingston both played well, and the home side were enabled to gain a lead of 57 on the innings. When Leicestershire went in the second time, however, nine on the side made double figures, though the bowling was never mastered. Northants, set 151 to win, collapsed completely before Odell and Astill, and suffered a reverse to the extent of 115 runs. Score and analysis: — C. D. McMillan, c and b Cobb ................. 9 G. M.
