Sir,—My attention has been drawn to an issue of Cricket of date May 16th, 1907, in which a certain Australian record score, 1,238, made by Ulster against Macquarie at Sydney, New South Wales, in year 1874, and appearing in the “ World’s Cricket Records,” compiled by me for Anthony Hordern and Sons, of this city, has been questioned, and in which I have been invited to give conclusive evidence of same to English authorities. I ampleased to reiterate same per medium of your valuable issue as one in substance the same which appeared in several Australian publications, and notably in my “ Fifty Years of Cricket,” published in the year 1895. Now, if my disputants were, as I am, conversant with the circumstances and surroundings of the match referred to, played, I might add, by two impromptu elevens, adopting for their particular purpose the names given above, and composed of 22 players engaged in the building trade, they will probably agree with me that after all there is nothing really very remarkable in this record, when considered the combined circumstance that the match in question occupied four afternoons and was played under conditions, as to locality, which strongly favoured the batsmen and in the absence of present-day so-called boundary hits! As thematch referred to took place, as I have already stated, in year 1874, it is quite beyond my power toresuirect the players to substan tiate their performances, no more possible indeed than it would be for my querists to resurrect Bishop Ken to'question him as to whether he ever played cricket at Winchester College in the early sixteenth century. Of the further contention made by Mr. Ashley- Cooper of certain omissions in records referred to, perhaps for this gentleman’s information the intentional omission by me of chronicling uninteresting “ rubbishy statistics” of no interest to any-one, combined with the very limited space afforded our cricket almanac, will best account for this as simply a waste of time, space, and energy. I am, etc., F redk . J. I ronside . Cromwell House, Moore Park, Sydney, Australia. July 8 , 1907. LANSDOWN CRICKET CLUB. To the Editor of C ricket . Sir,—As hen. sec. of the Lansdown Cricket Club I am writing to know if you will help me in getting out a record of the club during its long existence by stating that I should be glad of the loan of any records of the above club from its earliest days. As I daresay you know, the original club was called the Balh Club, and before 1800, and down to 1824 played on the Sydenham fields where the Midland Railway Station now stands. We then went to Lansdown, near where the present racecourse is, but returned in a few years to the Sydenham Fields, coming to our present ground at Combe Park in 1867. Yours faithfully, H. L. S.
