Cricket 1907
A ug . 15, 1907. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 343 attractive display. With Bowell he made 56 for the first wicket, and with Sprot 55 for the second. He made his 07 out of 124 in 75 minutes, gave one chance, and hit two 6 ’s (out of the ground, off Braund) and eight 4’s. During the night there was rain, and, in consequence, the wicket gave the bowlers considerable assistance on the Friday. Hampshire’s last six wickets went down in three- quarters of an hour for 58, their innings thereby realising 59 less than that of Somerset. When the home side went in the second time, Langford and Persse bowled splendidly and were so well supported by the field that the whole side were sent back for 95 in an hour and 20 minutes. At one time it seemed probable that a much smaller total would result, for the score was only 38 when the seventh wicket fell. Hampshire made light of the 155 set them to win, for, after Mead and Bowell had scored 63 for the first wicket, Sprot made 69 net out in 70 minutes, and Hampshire won by eight wickets. Sprot hit eleven 4’s. Score and analysis :— S omerset . First innings. Second innings. L. C. H. Lancashire won the toss, and went in first on an excellent wicket, but a poor start was made. MacLaren was out to the first ball he received, and Spooner had made only 18 when he was bowled in trying to drive. At 38 Poidevin was bowled off his pads, but Tyldesley and Sharp then got the better of the bowling and added 123 for the fourth wicket in eighty minutes. Tyldesley, who hit nine 4’s during the two hours he was in, played a good innings, but was not seen at his best, whilst Sharp batted ninety- fivc minutes for his faultless 62, and made many fine drives. During the innings of 236, Fielder took nine wickets for 108 runs. In response Kent lost Dillon at 36 and Seymour at 68 , after which Humphreys and Hutchings added 36 without being separated. The partnership of the pair for the third wicket lasted altogether seventy-five minutes, and realised 111. Humphreys played a steady innings, but Hutchings, hitting brilliantly, reached 53 out of 70 in fifty minutes, and scored his 108 out of 143 in an hour and three-quarters. He made his runs all round the wicket, hit sixteen 4’s, and was at last bowled off his pad. When 64 ho offered a hard chance to MacLaren, but made no other mistake. Cook took seven wickets for 105 in the innings of 300. Lancashire, 64 in arrears, lost MacLaren for 11, but Spooner and Poidevin atoned for his short comings by putting on 113 in sixty-five minutes. The Australian played a very useful innings, but was quite overshadowed by Spooner, who reached 50 out of 71 in fifty minutes, and made his 134 out of 212 in one hundred and forty-five. The last-named hit twenty 4’s, and made fine strokes ali round the wicket, and offered only one chance—to the slips when 61. At the end of the second day, Lancashire, with lour wickets in hand, were 174 runs on. On Saturday the innings quickly closed, and Kent were set 227 to win. Dillon, Humphreys, and Seymour were all sent back for 27, and the collapse which had set in continued so thoroughly that the total was only 87 when the seventh wicket fell. Day and Blythe played pluckily, but Lancashire won comfortably by 87 runs. Dean bowled splendidly, and was well supported by Cook. It will be seen that the wicket was not once hit during the innings.
