Played at Brighton on August 1, 2, and 3. Sussex won by ten wickets. Butt, owing to an injured hand, was unableto assist Sussex in this match, and Young kept wicket in his stead. Derbyshire, however, owing to the absence of Lawton, were even more severely handicapped, yet managed to stay in almost the whole of the first day for 349. They made an excellent start, Wright and Ollivierre in eighty-five minutes putting up 106 together for the first wicket, the latter then being caught for a faultless effort of 53. Wright was second out, at 120 , after batting one hundred minutes ; he hit six 4’s. Carlin and Humphries put on 38 together in an hour, and Cadman and Rickman 107 in seventy-five minutes. Cadman batted an hour and three-quarters for 50, whilst Rickman, hitting eight 4’8, took only seventy-five minutes to compile 68 . In the last five minutes of the day, Sussex scored 8 without loss. On Friday momingVine wascaught at the wicket at 31, having batted over half an hour for 7, and Killick played on ere he had made a run. Fry then partnered Cox, and a great improvement took place, the pair adding 47 for the third wicket. With Young in a still greater improvement was effected, and it was not until 150 had been put on in ninety- five minutes that the bowlers met with their next success. Young showed capital form in making 56, and hit six 4’s, and Fry, after batting one hundred and forty-five minutes, completed his 100. On Friday everything was dwarfed by Fry’s batting. Holding himself back when Sussex had to go in overnight, he commenced his innings when a couple of wickets had fallen, and during the two hundred and forty- five minutes he was in scored 187 out of 336, reaching his 50 in ninety minutes and his 100 in one hundred and forty-five minutes. He made some splendid drives, and hit twenty-three 4’s, and during his long tenure of the wicket offered no chance, although when he had made 15 he put up a ball in the long- field which Slater misjudged. With Cox he added 47, with Young 150, with Nason 55, and with Relf 84. The last-named carried out his bat for 67, but he was twine missed. With the close of the innings play ceased for the day. There was much rain during the night, but play was resumed, in a bad light, at the usual hour on Saturday. Olliverre was lbw at 3, and shortly afterwards there was a delay of forty-five minutes on account of rain. Only Wright, Carlin, Humphries, and Cadman reached double figures, and the whole side were disposed of for 128, Relf taking six wickets at a cost of ten runs each. Sussex quickly obtained the necessary 25 runs, and so won by ten wickets. Score and analysis :— D erbyshire . First innings. L. G. Wright, b C ox..........59 O. A.
