A u g . 1, 1907. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 319 L E IC E S T E R SH IR E v. W A R W IC K SH IR E . Played at Leicester on July 29, 30. kinneir ’ s or pat periormance . Drawn. Leicestershire won the toss and sent Warwick shire in on a soft wicket, but as the pitch did not assist the bowlers much the home side did not obtain so great an advantage as they evidently anticipated. The scoring during the day was very slow, only *200 being made in four hours for eight wickets. Fishwick, however, played bright cricket, and during the fifty-five minutes he was in 70 were added for the fourth wicket. At the end of the day, Kinneir, who had gone in first, carried out his bat for 68 . At times he was very tedious, and during the first hour he was in made only 7. On Tuesday it was found impossible to make a start until half- past two, the rain having affected the wicket greatly. The last two wickets added 39, and Kinneir was left to carry out his bat for 70, made in four hours and a-quarter. Leicestershire, by the end of the day, despite consistent batting, had been dis missed for 187. After Wood and Whitehead had been disposed of for 18, Knight and King added 62 in fifty-five minutes. The third day’s play was ren dered remarkable by Kinneir again carrying his bat right through the innings. (See “ Gossip.”) White head played a capital innings in the last stage of the match, and was not out when the game ended in an even draw. Score and analysis :— W arwickshire . First innings. NORTH AM P iON SH IRE . Played at Soulhend-on-Sea on July 29, 30, and 31. Drawn. Although without Crosse and Hawkins, North amptonshire played a first innings of 264. At one time the total appeared likely to be far larger, for it was not until.235 that the fifth wicket fell. Cox and Thompson gave the side a capital start by making 78 for the first wicket, the former batting two hours and being third out at 118 for a faultless 78, which included nine 4’s, the majority of them very good off-drives. Kingston, who hit eight 4’s and batted one hundred minutes without a mistake, hit well to leg and in partnership with Hawtin added 82 for the fifth wicket in an hour and twenty minutes. The last named played very steadily, and when the innings closed carried out his bat for 35, which took two hours to make. Before stumps were drawn Essex scored 33 for the loss of Douglas's wicket. On Tuesday play was restricted by rain to thirty-five minutes, nothing being done after ten minutes to one. Fane fell to a catch at short-lcg at 50, and Perrin and McGahey afterwards added 14 without being separated. Yesterday Perrin remained until he had scored 53, but of the others only Buckenham made as many as 25, and Essex found themselves 68 behind on the innings. Northamptonshire, upon going in the second time, played a slow game, and declared with three wickets down for 141, but Essex experienced not the slightest difficulty in playing out time. The wicket helped the bowlers somewhat, but not to a very great extent. Owing to rain during Monday night play could not commence until half past two on the noxt day, but so greatly did the pitch then assist the bowlers than twenty wickets went down for 224. Dennett failed to benefit from the conditions as much as was expected, his four wickets costing over 23 runs each, but this notwith standing, Somerset obtained a lead of only 18 on the innings. When Gloucestershire went in the second time Lewis took five wickets for 8 runs and, bowling unchanged with Mordaunt, dismissed the visitors for 37. Luce was run out in an unusual manner, a ball returned from Board's bat striking his foot and disturbing the wicket whilst he was out of his ground. Somerset, when stumps were drawn, , required only 20 runs to win. Yesterday Somerset ' lost four wickets in making the runs, and accord ingly won by six. Score and analysis:— G lou cestersh ire. With Jessop and Braund playing for England at Leeds, each side was without its best man, and the home team also lacked the services of Tyler, who preferred not to appear. Board made 21 of the first 25 runs scored, but his good example was so poorly followed that half the side were out for 75. Salter, fortunately, was at his best and was well supported by Huggins, who helped him to add 45for the seventh wicket in half an hour. The last-named was twice missed, but Salter played a very correct game and hit eight 4 s during the hour and a-half he was in.
