30 2 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J jjly 25, 1907. HAMPSHIRE v. WORCESTERSHIRE. Played at Portsmouth on Jnly 22, 23, and 24. A STAND o r 274 FOR, THE FIRST TVICKET. Worcestershire won by an innings & 180 runs. The wicket at Portsmouth was in splendid condi tion when this match commenced 011 Monday, and runs came so quickly that during the day as many as 522 were made for eight wickets in three hundred and fifteen minutes. H. K. Foster and Bowley made 274 together for the first wicket in one hundred and sixty-five minutes, the amateur being the first to leave, although his companion was sent back at the same total. H. K. Foster reached 50 in seventy minutes, and 100 (out of 174) in two hours ; he droye and cut with much vigour and hit twenty 4’s, but was very fortunate in being missed when 5 by Lyon at square-leg. Bowley, who made 110 out of 274 in one hundred and sixty-five minutes, reached 50 out of 134 in one hundred minutes and completed three figures in two hours and a-half. He also cut and drove finely, hit thirteen 4’s, and gave no chance. Burns failed to score, but, by brilliant cricket, R. E. and G. N. Foster added 122 for the fourth wicket in an hour. The last named made his 76 out of 128 in sixty minutes and hit a dozen 4’s, but his display was marred by a chance to Bowell at point when 20. The fifth wicket went down at 403, and, with Arnold, Burrows, and Pearson making useful scores, the total, when stumps were drawn had reached 522 for eight wickets. On the next morning ten minutes proved sufficient in which to obtain the two out standing wickets, the innings, after lasting three hundred and twenty-five minutes, closing for 536. Arnold batted ninety-five minutes for his 63. Mead and Stone made 31 in a-quarter of an hour for Hamp shire’s first wicket, and, although Hill and Sprot made useful scores, the home side were made to follow-on 376 in arrears. In their second innings they lost their first five wickets for 91, and, although the later men showed better form, the side still required 199 to save the innings defeat, with only one wicket in hand when play ceased for the day. Yesterday ten minutes play sufficed to finish the match, the visitors winning easily by an innings and 180 runs. Score and analysis ;— W orcestershire . H. K.
