Cricket 1907
286 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J u ly 18, 1907. GENTLEMEN v. PLATERS. Played at the Oval on July 15, 16, and 17. THE OVAL JUBILEE MATCH. Players won by 54 runs. Although as many as nine counties were engaged in the first part of this week, the Surrey committee succeeded in obtaining two very good sides for the Jubilee Match at the Oval between Gentlemen and Players. As the weather was all that could be desired, spectators were numerous, as many as 0,758 paying for admission on the opening day. On the Monday morning it was found that Napier would be unable to play, so Odell was included in his stead, whilst, as the wicket was hard, Wass was omitted from the Players’ team. The Players, winning the toss, sent in Hayward and Hobbs, the bowling being shared by Brearley and Douglas. When 26 had been made in twenty minutes, Hobbs was outlbw, whilst 12 runs later Hayward was bowled in playing forward. The 50 went up in forty-five minutes, but at G 6 Braund was caught in the slips, three good wickets then being down. Tarrant then came in and helped Iremonger to add 26 and Gunn 75 for the fifth wicket in fifty minutes. The last-named, who was fifth out at 167, was missed when 15 by Lawton at mid-off. Tarrant was playing a bright and free game, milking some beautiful drives, and had the personal satisfac tion of completing his 1,000 runs for the season : he had already secured over a hundred wickets. Alto gether, he made 79 out of 145 in one hundred and five minutes by faultless cricket, hitting fourteen 4’s, and being at last finely caught and bowled by Douglas. Whitehead, who was given a life by Beldam in the slips, drove well, and with Trott put on 48 in an hour and a quarter for the eighth wicket. He hit nine 4’s and played an attractive game. Neither Oates nor Hallam did much, and the innings closed for 303. Brearley and Douglas, who shared the wickets between them, did much good work and thoroughly deserved their success. During the last seventy minutes of the day, Payne and Young batted brilliantly, and, without being parted, made exactly a hundred in the time named. The first seven runs of the innings were all extras, but then Young made three 4’s off an over from Bucken ham and immediately afterwards hit a ball from Hallam out of the ground to leg for 6 . Payne after wards hit well, and by the time stumps were drawn, 100 had been made without loss. On the second morning Young was caught at the wicket with the total unaltered, but Payne stayed in until 142, when, having hit ten 4’s during the hour and three-quarters he was at the wickets, he was caught : he might have been caught soon after completing his 50, but made no other mistake. Douglas played most steadily, and when he had made 10 was almost run out. Lawton, after making 9, was caught in the slips, and at 171 Craw ford was sent back, fourth out, by means of a brilliant catch at long-off by Braund. Douglas, con sidering the excellence of the wicket, played a very slow game : he made his 31 out of 116 in one hun dred and ten minutes. Jones was finely caught by Ilillam off his own bowling when he made 5, and MacLaren was held in the long field ere making a run. Beldam batted seventy minutes for 31, and was eighth out at 230, and, after Imlay and Odell had made double figures, the Gentlemen’s innings closed for 2'5. Both Buckenham and Hallam bowled well, the latter performing better than his analysis would lead one to suppose. With a lead of 48 the Playerscommenced theirsecond innings in promising fashion, Hayward and Hobbs scoring 42 together before the latter was out to a fine catch at short-leg by Payne. Without any addition, however, Ire monger was bowled, and at 62 Braund was caught in the slips. Hayward, after batting for seventy minutes, was fourth out at 66 , and, although Gunn and Tarrant put on 41, half the side had been dis posed of on a fast wicket for 107. Tarrant battad twenty minutes ere making a run, and, like Whit 3- head, failed to reproduce his form of the first innings. Gunn was seen to the greatest advantage, and furthermore made his runs at a time when they were needed. He scored his 75 out of 137 in eighty- five minutes, aud hit a 5 and eleven 4’s : he was at last dismissed by a very good catch by Crawford off his own bowling. The brightest part of his innings was whilst he was in with Trott, runs then coming so freely that 75 were added for the seventh wicket in forty minutes. Trott, who carried out his bat at the end of the day for 41, hit with much power, but was let off by Payne in the slips, when he had made 10. When stumps were drawn the Players, with a wicket in hand, were 277 runs on. Yesterday mornirg the innings was quickly finished, and the Gentlemen were set 288 to win—a heavy task for the final stage of a match. Crawford took six wickets for 54, bowling admirably. The Gentle men lost Young at 2, but Beldam played steadily and helped Payne to take the score to 53 before fall ing a victim to Trott. With the total unchanged Buckenham bowled Payne, but following this disaster MacLaren and Douglas defied the bowling so successfully that the total was taken to 125 before they were parted by the latter meeting the fate which befell Payne. MacLaren played a bright game, and it was during his association with Jones that the brightest cricket of the innings was seen. So long as they remained together there was always a possibility of the runs being obtained, but after MacLaren had been bowled for a capital 56, which included nine 4’s, only Odell met with much success, and the Plaj-ers won comfortably by 54 runs.
