NORTHAMPTONSHIRE v. LANCA SHIRE. Played at Northampton on July 15,16, and 17. Lancashire won by 36 runs. Northamptonshire, upon winning the toss, put Lancashire in, but a splendid innings by Tyldesley quite destroyed any advantage which might ordinarily have rested with the home side in consequence of the move. Makepeace was bowled at 17, and Hornby left at 39, but Sharp played more slowly than usual and claimed only 19 of the 38 made whilst in. At lunch time half the side were out for 89. Tyldesley reached his 50 out of 99 in an hour and three-quarters, and afterwards so monopolised the run-getting that, in all, he made 141 out of *235 in two hundred and twenty minutes. He scored freely all round the wicket, hit thirteen 4's, and made only one mistake—a chance to Cox at uoint when 120. In response to the total of 252, Northamptonshire had lost Kingston, Vials, and Buswell for 47 by the end of the day. On the following morning Cox and Pool added 53 for the fourth wicket, and the latter and Thompson 66 for the fifth. Pool was in for just less than two hours and a-half, and made 74, but was missed several times—on three occasions before he had made 10. The consequence of all the missed chances was that the home side were enabled to get within six of their opponents’ total. In their second innings Lancashire lost half their wickets for 60, but before play ceased Stanning (who was missed in the slips when 7) and Hornby put on 34 without further loss. With 13 added Hornby was bowled, but Stanning and Harry added 57 in 50 minutes for the seventh wicket, the former hitting nine 4’s during the 110 minutes he was in. Set 172 to win, Northants lost Cox, Kingston, and Beasley before lunch for 24, and although Pool played another lucky innings and Thompson and others made double figures, Lanca shire always had a little in hand and eventually won by 36 runs. HAMPSHIRE. Played at Edgbaston on July, 15, 16, and 17. Hampshire won by 95 runs. Hampshire commenced by losing Stone to a very fine catch in the slips at 14, and, although Mead made 34 in 70 minutes, and Sprot 40 in 80, half the side were out for 93. Fortunately, Capt. Palmer and Badcock made serviceable scores, and the total reached 188before the last wicket fell. In response, Warwickshire lost Kinneir and Charlesworth for 30, and by the end of the day had five wickets down for 108. On Tuesday Baker and Fishwick put on 72 for the sixth wicket, the latter batting 80 minutes without making any mistake whatever. In conse quence of this useful partnership, Warwickshire led by 15 on the first innings. The feature of Hamp shire’s second display was the batting of Sprot, who hit eight 4’s, the majority of them drives, during the two hours and 20 minutes lie was in : when lie had made 53 he was missed by Field at mid-on. Badcock again did well, and Persse, who was twice missed, made 38. The home were left 220 to win, and by the end of the day liad lost Kinneir and Moorhouse for 29. Neither Charles worth nor Hargreave made any stay, but Quaife and Baker put on 49 for the fifth wicket, after which Orr bowled with such effect that the innings closed for 124, leaving Hampshire winners by the margin stated. There is a very great difference between University and Test Match teams. “ L.L.” (Thatcher).— " Rabbits.’*
