LIVERPOOL AND DISTRICT v. CAM BRIDGE UNIVERSITY. Played at Liverpool on July 8, 9 and 10. Drawn. Monday was a blank day on account of rain, but, as though to compensate for this, so much progress was made with the game on the Tuesday, that as many as nineteen wickets fell for 298 runs during the fourhoursand a-halfplay was in progress. Buchanan and Payne, who went in first together, hit up 78 in thirty-five minutes, the former, who hit eleven 4’s, making in all 66 out of 97 in forty minutes. Stod- dart then bowled with such effect that the score was only 149 when the seventh wicket fell. Mugliston and Goodwin both played good cricket, and during the twenty-five minutes they were together put on 40. Against Goodwin and Lyttelton the home side collapsed badly, and by the end of the day had lost nine wickets for 98. Yesterday it was found necessary to play on a fresh wicket, the proper one having been so damaged by rain, but even then the game could not be resumed until a-quarter to one. The last Liverpool wicket quickly fell, and so much difficulty was found in obtaining runs that the visitors were put out in their second innings for 126, leaving Liverpool 222 to win. The latter, after losing three wickets for 40, made a good fight, only 18 being required with the last two men in when stumps were drawn. This was due largely to the partnership of 117 for the fifth wicket by Steel and Barnes. The last-named reached 50 out of 72 in 35 minutes, and altogether made 80 out of 117 in an hour. He hit eight 4’s. Score and analysis:— Cam bridge U niv First innings. J. N. Buchanan, c Barnes, b Stoddart........................66 M. \V. Warwickshire won by five wickets. On the first day play was restricted by rain to three hours and a-half, during which time Hamp shire made 183 for half their wickets. The home side were not at full strength, Hill appearing in the Gentlemen v. Players match at Lord’s, Llewellyn being injured, and Smoker having measles. Bowell made only 3 and Stone 17, but Sprot and Persse both lent Mead much assistance, the former helping to add 46 for the second wicket and the latter 73 for the fourth. At the end of the day Mead was still in with 90 to his account. On Tuesday Santall and Hargreave got the five outstanding wickets down for 40 in three-quarters of an hour. Mead took his score to 102 and hit eleven 4’s in the course of his excellent display: apart from a chance to Moorhouse when 89 he made no mistake. Jesson, who carried out his bat for 23, showed most promising form, and as he supplemented his innings by some effective bowling, the County would appear to have found a very good young cricketer in him. Warwickshire lost Fishwick with only 7 scored, but Charlesworth and Kinneir put on 120 together for the second wicket in one hundred minutes, the latter, who was first out, hitting five 4’s in his very serviceable 52. Charlesworth played a bright innings, and hit a 5 and fifteen 4’s during the two hours and ten minutes he was in: his driving was very strong, and the only mistake he was guilty of was when, at 82, he offered a chance of stumping. Quaife and Baker afterwards added 81 together, and the score was up to 253 when the fourth wicket went down. At 266 Jesson was put on for the second time, and he met with such success that the last six wickets went down for 46, his slow leg-breaks accounting for five of them for 23. With the close of the innings for 312, play ceased for the day. On the third morning the resumption was delayed for 45 minutes by rain before Hampshire could start their second innings with Mead and Jesson. The pair made 30 together before the latter was sent back, and four later Mead was finely caught in the slips. Sprot was third out at 35, and the total was but 63 when the fifth wicket fell. Langford and Badcock made serviceable scores, but Warwickshire were set only 60 to win, a number, however, in making which they lost half their wickets. Score and analysis :— H ampshire .
