Cricket 1907

CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J u ly 11, 1907. constantly. Perhaps the amateur, was only able to play occasionally, and if he did not succeed there was grumbling because he had excluded some promising professional. He thought the Society would be wise if they discouraged any grumbling, because occa sionally a young professional might have to stand down to allow some first-class amateur to appear. He did not believe they could have too much of cricket, because the game was so valuable in bringing out the best qualities in young men. F e w cricketers have recdered better service to their county than Killick has done to Sussex. Last week’s match with the South Africans, at Hove, marked his 250th consecutive appearance for the side. This must surely be a record of its kind, for, apart altogether from the length of service involved, there are many things— ill-health, a missed train, etc. — which might so easily occur to prevent a man’s appearance in a match. T he match between Gentlemen and Players which was abandoned at Lord’s yesterday was the 166th which has taken Iplace between the two sides. The results of the whole series are as follows :— Won Won by by Ground Pl’yd. Gents. Pl’rs. Drn. Tie. T h e Athletic News this week stated that a Committee Meeting was to be held at Lord’s on Monday in connection with the forthcoming visit of the English team to Australia. An innocent stranger arriving on the ground before lunch-time that day might have imagined that the meeting was taking place in the middle of the ground, as for a few minutes several of the players were seen con ferring with animation with the umpires, and even some of the public encroached a good deal on the field and gave directions to nobody in particular at the top of their voice. But the little excite ment was due only to one of the batsmen appealing against the light. O w i n g to a slip, I was made to say last week that Mr. J. R. Napier is an old Uppingham boy. He was, of course, at Marlborough from January, 1898, until Midsummer, 1901, and played in the Eleven for three years. ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS. R. W.
