MacLaren, before he had made a run, was badly missed by Rickman at mid- on, and, as results proved, the blunder proved expensive. At the end of twenty minutes, when only a single had been scored, bad light stopped play, and shortly afterwards there was a heavy shower. When the game was resumed in the after noon MacLaren showed some of his old form, scoring 47 before being third out at 71. Poidevin was seen at his best in making 14. and with Sharp added 55 for the fourth wicket in 45 minutes. Stanning also appeared to advantage, but, with the last five wickets falling for 38, the innings, after lasting 2:,0 minutes, closed for 182. Stumps were then drawn for the day. On the following morning Wright was bowled with only a single scored, and at 30 Ollivierre was caught in the slips. Needham and Morton played very carefully, and once they were parted a collapse took place, no one else reaching double figures, the whole side being out for 103. Dean, who bowled admirably, took nine wickets for 46. Upon Lancashire going in for their second innings, a fine stand was made for the first wicket by Hornby and MacLaren. The former, when 13, was badly missed by Ollivierre. and the mistake proved terribly expensive. The batsmen never appeared troubled in the least, and. playing a bright and attractive game, put up the hundred in an hour. It was not until 45 minutes later that a separation whs effected, MacLaren then being caught and bowled for a faultless 92, which contained thirteen 4’s. Hornby remained until 224, when, having made 125 in 135 minutes, he was bowled by Carlin. He hit all round the wicket with much power, and made twenty 4’s. Two runs later rain stopped play for the day, the visitors then being 305 ahead with eight wickets in hand. Rain fell heavily at Chesterfield on Wed nesday, rendering further play impossible. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE v. SURREY. Played at Northampton on July 1, 2, and 3. W . EAST S BENEFIT. Drawn. Surrey gave a bright display on a good wicket on the opening day, scoring 277 in three hours and a-quarter. In the absence of Hayward, who was playing at Lord’s, Baker came into the side, and justified his inclusion by an innings of 50. The feature of the day’s cricket was furnished by Hobbs, who scored 82 in an hour and a-half, being fourth out at 140. He hit ten 4’s, and, apart from a very difficult chance to the wicket-keeper when 54, made no mistake. He made 32 in partnership with Lord Dalmeny, 64 in fifty-five minutes with Hayes, and 31 with Baker. The last named, who hit five 4’s during the hundred minutes he was in, also helped Marshal to put on 40 in twenty-five minutes. After the fall of the eighth wicket, some further bright cricket was seen, Smith and Hitch adding 53 in less than half-an-hour. The former, as in the previous week at the Oval, hit very hard, but was missed when he had made 7. The home side lost Crosse and Vials for 10, and after 24 had been added with out further loss, play was stopped owing to bad light. Shortly afterwards rain fell, and stumps were eventually drawn with the score as above. On the Tuesday morning Cox batted eighty minutes for 19, but six wickets were down for 77. East was in nearly three-quarters of an hour for his valuable 21, but the best cricket of the innings was seen when Beasley and Hawkins came together after the eighth wicket had fallen at 89. The latter was missed when he had made a single, but the pair stayed together for forty minutes, during which time they added 59 and saved the follow-on. With a lead of 121, Surrey commenced their second innings with no thought of defeat. As events proved, it was fortunate that they gained so great an advantage during the first half of the game. They lost Lord Dalmeny at 16, Hayes at 33, and Hobbs at 38 : the last named remained long enough to complete his thousand runs for the season. Baker and Goatly alone of the others made double figures, the innings closing for 96. The collapse was re markable, as the pitch was in good condition, there being nothing in it to assist the bowlers at all in any way. Northants were set 218 to win, and by the end of the day had scored 88 for the loss of Cox’s wicket. Yesterday no play was possible on account of rain, the match accordingly being aban doned.
