Cricket 1907
250 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J uly 4, 1907. of two as hitherto; this will be played on September 24th, 25th, and 26th. The return match with the Gentlemen of Philadelphia will take place on September 27th, 28th, and 30th. It ha9 not yet, however, been decided upon which grounds the various games will be played. In the match recently played between St. Paul’s School and Mill Hill School, a remarkable partnership took place after the former’s ninth wicket had fallen. W. K. Brown went in last man, and not only scored 56 not out, but helped H. Chesterton to add as many as 185. The last-named played a fine innings of 129, which contained twenty-four 4’s. A few days ago a loving-cup was pre sented to Mr. G. Hillyard Swinstead by the members of the Artists C.C. on the occasion of his retirement from the Honorary Secretaryship of the Club. In scribed on the cup were the words :— “ To G. Hillyard Swinstead, from Members of the Artists’ Cricket Club in recognition of the great services he has rendered as Hon. Secretary, 1898-1907.” Mr. Swinstead was the first Hon. Secretary the Artists C.C. had, and during the nine years of his cflice the Club flourished exceedingly, owing much of its success to his untiring energy, both as organiser and performer with bat and ball. During his regime the membership grew to 135, all bona fide artists — painters, sculptors, architects, and black- and-white artists—and about ten matches a year were arranged against the kindred professions—authors, musicians, and actors —and country-house elevens. Though compelled, for private reasons, to retire from the Hon. Secretaryship, Mr. Swin stead intends to take as active a part as ever in the field. J. G. C. S co tt, who played an innings of 137 against Oxford University at Eastbourne on Tuesday, on his first appearance for Sussex, was Captain of the Marlborough X I. last year. In 1905 he averaged 24'18 for eleven completed innings, and last season 17*15 for thirteen. In the former year he scored only 16 in the Rugby match at Lord’s, but last season he did better with 47 and 0. He is expected to go into residence at Pem broke College, Cambridge, in the autumn.
